News from around the Cal WALKS Network
In January, California WALKS and a coalition of 12 lead organizations asked Californians to stand up and show their support for walking, biking, and Safe Routes to School in the Governor's newly proposed Active Transportation Program. In less than two weeks, Californians showed their unwavering support for active transportation in California: THANK YOU to the 7,000+ Californians and organizations that signed our petition to Gov. Brown. Your overwhelming public support sends a loud and clear message to Governor Brown: Californians want the Active Transportation Program to be transformative, to make California the trendsetting national leader in walking, biking, and Safe Routes to School--not a business-as-usual program. The petition has been delivered to the Governor, and we will keep you updated as developments occur. Read the final petition here. Thank you again to all those individuals and organizations who signed on!

Walking Loops with WalkLongBeach |
Example walking loop for the Willmore City Neighborhood
Walking loops list distance, difficulty, and points of interest along the way.
| In partnership with CityFabrick, WalkLongBeach has been engaging diverse communities in Long Beach to walk more and to advocate for improvements in the walking environment. Key to their strategy is the use of small walking loop postcards that map out short walks, rank the difficulty of the walk, and highlight points of interest along the walking loop. The walking loop cards have been a very effective promotional tool to get more residents physically active and walking regularly, while also connecting with others in the community. WalkLongBeach, CityFabrick, and other partners engage community residents to develop the walking loops--to-date, 10 walking loops have been identified, with an ultimate goal of 50 walking routes. The walking loop program will culminate in a downloadable 'how-to' toolkit that will outline step-by-step information and offer open source templates for other local walk groups to customize and sustain their own walking routes and programs.

The Project for Public Spaces has released a new set of case studies and tools to help communities "rightsize" their streets. Rightsizing is about reallocating street space to better serve its full range of users, while remaining sensitive to the context and vision of the local community. Rightsizing a street explicitly recognizes that every trip begins and ends on foot--meaning that rightsized streets are safer, more comfortable, and more enjoyable for all of us when we walk. Check out the Rightsizing Streets Guide here
