Customers receive incentives
to "Shop Local for the Holidays" in Bayfield

Bayfield businesses raise money for area food pantry on December 6th

Bayfield's Holiday Shopping Night

The community of Bayfield is striving to keep holiday dollars local in more ways than one. Next Friday, December 6th is the third annual "Shop Local for the Holidays" night from 5pm to 8pm at 21 businesses throughout Bayfield. The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Bureau is once again challenging community members to buy local through this holiday campaign while offering a meaningful incentive to sweeten the deal; participating businesses will donate a portion of their evening's proceeds to the Bayfield Area Food Pantry and the Chamber will match the combined donations up to $1,000.

The intent is twofold. "Residents in small communities like Bayfield need to understand that for every dollar spent in local businesses, 45 cents is reinvested in the area," says Chamber Executive Director David M. Eades. "Our 400 member businesses all bring sales tax, property tax, lodging tax, and infrastructure funds to help run the city and town. In addition, these very businesses provide jobs as well as significant donations to the nonprofit organizations that provide much needed community services," Eades adds.

This is the third year that the Bayfield Chamber is sponsoring this event as a fundraiser for the local food pantry. Last year, the single-night event raised an impressive total of $2,192. The help is much needed as the Bayfield Area Food Pantry's demands are ongoing, especially during the holiday season.

Stephanie Bresette, Bayfield Area Food Pantry facility manager, remarks, "The Bayfield Chamber has been at the forefront of helping to spread the word of need, and they provide a 24 hour drop-off location for donations. This year's event proceeds will go towards enriching Christmas dinner for up to 35 families. Thanks to the contributions from the Bayfield community, we're able to continue our efforts." Bresette encourages shoppers to stop by on Friday night and "see our operation and wonder how we distributed almost 50,000 pounds of food from it in the last year!" The Bayfield Area Food Pantry, which is located on the back side of Bates Art Bar, will also be open for accepting donations.

While contributing to the success of this community-wide effort to give to those in need, shoppers will enjoy benefits of their own. Businesses will offer holiday refreshments and spectacular seasonal specials during the event, while treating shoppers to an assortment of entertainment ranging from demonstrations to door prizes. This year's event hours have also been extended until 8pm to give customers plenty of time to browse, have some dinner or a drink at a local eatery, and check some items off their holiday shopping lists.

Businesses that are expected be open during the "Shop Local for the Holidays" night from 5pm to 8pm on December 6th include: Apostle Islands Booksellers, Bates Art Bar, Bayfield Wine & Spirits, Big Water Coffee Roasters, Brownstone Centre, The Bayfield Inn, Eckels Pottery & Fine Craft Gallery, ENCORE Resale Store, Goldie, Hitching Post, Howl Clothing & Adventure, Joanne's Scandinavian, Keeper of the Light, Kelly & Crew, Maggie's Restaurant, Orchard's Edge Quilt Shop, Old Rittenhouse Inn's Landmark Restaurant, Roxanne's Gifts, Stone's Throw, Sweet Sailing, and What Goes 'Round bookstore.

"Shop Local for the Holidays" directories will be available online at bayfield.org, at participating shops, and in the Bayfield Chamber Visitor Center located at 42 South Broad Street. For more information, please visit bayfield.org.
