Message from the President

It has been a long winter, and spring may have finally arrived in NE Ohio. Our spring sports definitely had obstacles due to the weather conditions this season, yet the Raiders are on top of the OAC! Read all the sport summaries below to find out the accomplishments Mount Union student-athletes are achieving. It makes us all proud to be a Purple Raider.

 

Mark your calendars for the annual M Club golf outing scheduled for Saturday, July 11 and the Hall of Fame weekend on September 18 and 19. You're invited to attend! Grab your foursome and register for the outing in July. Check the website for the latest information including how to register.

 

The next M Club meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 21 at 7 p.m. in the MAAC. Hope to see you there.

Hall of Fame Nominations Are Now Being Accepted!

Each year, Mount Union honors a select group of former student-athletes, coaches and athletic supporters with induction into the M Club Hall of Fame.

 

Nominate a fellow teammate for the 2015 induction class. Forms are available to download online. In order to be considered for the Hall of Fame, a nomination from an M club member (YOU) is required. Submit a nomination for a teammate today!

Congratulations to the following winter teams:

  • Men's Basketball - Won the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament; headed to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16. Mount Union men's basketball coach Mike Fuline has been named the Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year while senior guard Nate Jacubec was named to the second team.
  • Men's Swimming and Diving - #17 Tyler Moore competed in three events at the NCAA Championships and received OAC swimmer of the year honors.
  • Women's Swimming and Diving - Raiders win first ever Ohio Athletic Conference Championship; Staff of the Year Award
  • Men's Indoor Track - Won its record 34th overall and third straight Ohio Athletic Conference Championship; Mount Union's men's track and field team finished third at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, which is the Raiders best finish since placing second in 1998. Senior Sean Donnelly defended his title and set an NCAA Division III record in the weight throw. Mount Union won five Great Lakes Region Awards from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
  • Women's Indoor Track - Won its fourth straight and fifth overall Ohio Athletic Conference and sent several to the NCAA tournament meet.
  • Wrestling - Won the Ohio Athletic Conference title, Coach Schindel named OAC Coach of the Year and Coach Roberts named Mideast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. #7 Mount Union placed second in the NCAA Mideast Regional; Sent four to the NCAA Championships.

 

Congratulations to the following spring teams:

  • Baseball - The Purple Raiders are 20-14 overall and 8-8 in the OAC. It is the fourth straight year of at least 20 wins - a first in school history.
  • Men's Golf - Mount Union's Nick Popely wins OAC Title; Raiders finish third
  • Women's Golf - Mount Union finishes second in OAC Championship after playoff hole
  • Men's Lacrosse - Mount Union's men's lacrosse team closed its 2015 campaign with a 19-10 win over Wilmington.
  • Women's Lacrosse - Mount Union's No. 18 women's lacrosse team completed an undefeated regular season (16-0, 6-0 OAC) and are the number one seed in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament.
  • Softball - A three-run home run for senior Leigh Siedlak helped push the Raiders to a sweep of Wilmington in the final Ohio Athletic Conference games of the season.
  • Men's Tennis - No. 4 seed Mount Union lost a 5-1 decision to top seeded John Carroll in the semifinals of the 2015 Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament.  The Purple Raiders end their season at 14-6.  Sophomore Rob DeMarco (North Canton/Hoover) was named Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week (Apr. 6).
  • Women's Tennis - No. 3 seed Mount Union saw its season end with a 5-2 loss to No. 2 seed John Carroll in the semfinals of the 2015 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.  The Purple Raiders season ends with a 14-6 record. Mount Union senior MacKenzie Jenkins (North Hampton/Northwestern) was named Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year and was one of three Purple Raiders named to the All-OAC teams by the conference's head coaches.  Jenkins, the first Mount Union player ever to win the award is a three-time All-OAC First Team pick that went 18-1 as the Raiders' No. 1 singles player this year including 8-0 in OAC matches.  The 18 singles wins matches a Mount Union single season record.
  • Men's Track - Mount Union's men's track & field team won its fifth straight and conference record 32nd Ohio Athletic Conference championship at the 2015 OAC Championships. Tyler Mettille defended his conference title in the 400 meter hurdles while junior Andrew Milhoan also repeated as conference champion in the 110 meter hurdles. Senior Dan McGeary claimed the conference title in the 5000 meters and was All-OAC with a third place in the 1500 meters. Gerardo Vargas won the pole vault. Junior Tyler Sparks ran a leg of that 4x400 relay, won the 400 meter title and was sixth in the 200 meters to be named OAC Sprinter of the Meet. Seniors Chase Swisher and Tyler Mettille also ran legs of the 4x400 relay and had other top performances for the Raiders. Several have qualified to compete at the NCAA Nationals meet.
  • Women's Track - Mount Union's women's track and field team won its sixth straight and seventh overall title at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships. Brooke Mathie won the conference title in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:16.17. Senior Courtney Reese defended her title in the event with a season-best time of 56.75. Reese was also part of the conference title 4x100 meter relay team (48.33) along with senior Taylor Coghlan and freshmen Dana Crofoot and Katie Goedecke.

Mount Union Names Carter Poe Head Men's Soccer Coach 

The University of Mount Union has named Carter Poe head men's soccer coach. Poe spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Purple Raiders. "I look forward to meeting the opportunities and challenges of taking over the men's soccer program at Mount Union," commented Poe. "We have great facilities, programs, faculty and staff here at Mount Union and I am excited to grow the program here."
