Meet Sarah (Freeman'05) Herrmann

Sarah, a 2005 graduate who majored in media studies and writing, is actively involved with our Mount Union Club of D.C. She currently is the digital communications manager at the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).

ABMC is a small agency of the federal government tasked with managing all of America's overseas cemeteries and memorials that honor the fallen, with most of our sites being tied to World War I and World War II. In fact, more than 200,000 Americans are buried or memorialized overseas from these conflicts.

This year marked the 70th anniversary of the allied landings along the Normandy Coast during World War II. This unprecedented amphibious assault lead to the liberation of France and ultimately the continent of Europe. Normandy American Cemetery, which overlooks Omaha Beach, is the final resting place of more than 9,000 Americans that lost their lives in the Normandy Campaign.

On June 6, 2014, more than 12,000 attendees, including hundreds of WWII vets, gathered at the cemetery to commemorate this event that changed world history. Sarah was there to support the event and to provide live digital coverage via social media channels and ABMC's website so users were able to follow along. Through this experience, she had the opportunity to meet and talk with many WWII veterans and was continually struck by the extreme humbleness and graciousness of every veteran. When thanked for their service, most of their responses were very similar, "We had a job to do and we did it. We aren't heroes. We were just young men serving our country." Even though these men were in their late 80s or 90s, the pain in their faces was still very real. Their friends, their comrades in arms, are buried at Normandy American Cemetery and they still walked with heaviness in their hearts from these losses.

What an interesting career Sarah has! We encourage you to tell your story. Post on our Facebook page or send us an email at alumni@mountunion.edu to let us know what you are doing after your days at Mount Union!

Next month's featured city is Pittsburgh, PA. Do you live there? What do you want alumni to know about the city you call home?
