Making More Memories - Forever Mount

Another commencement ceremony is behind us, and with it came wonderful additions to our alumni family. We welcome them to our close-knit community and share that being an alumni comes with responsibilities. We encourage all of our alumni to remain connected and to give back to the University in a manner that is appropriate for them. Mount has given so much to so many of us, and I thank you all for your role in making the "Mount Union experience" happen for another set of graduates.

Enjoy the beginning of summer, and if your travels take you anywhere near Alliance, I welcome you to stop by the Office of Alumni Relations and University Activities to visit. We would be thrilled to see you and show you around campus.

Please join me in congratulating the class of 2011. We are very proud of our graduating seniors.

Featured Alumni Profile

Each month, we take a moment to share a brief story about one of our own to show you why we are so proud of our alumni across the globe.

This month we are featuring a faculty member at Mount Union - Martin Horning '71, professor of economics, accounting and business administration, who is retiring after 32 years of service.

Featured Event - 50th Class Reunion

Members of the Class of 1961 came back to campus this past weekend to celebrate their 50th class reunion! They had the opportunity to be reacquainted with fellow classmates followed by a tour of campus - my how campus has grown! The highlight of the day was a reunion dinner where everyone had the opportunity to say what they had been doing the past 50 years.

Several members of the class participated in the 165th Commencement Ceremony with current graduates. It was a touching moment when Dr. Richard F. Giese recognized the class - a tradition we look forward to sharing with you in the future as well.

Save The Date - October 8 - Reunions During Homecoming and Alumni Weekend

  • Reunions are definitely a highlight of the day. Milestone reunions will be held for class years ending in 1s and 6s, but as always, all alumni are invited back to campus to reunite and experience campus.
  • The Class of 1986 will be celebrating its 25th class reunion this year and the Class of 1976 will be celebrating its 35th class reunion. Be sure to watch for details organized by classmates on additional activities scheduled that weekend! If you're interested in organizing additional events for your milestone reunion, contact the Office of Alumni Relations and University Activities.

Check the website often for an up-to-date schedule as activities will be added this summer.

New programs

During the University of Mount Union Board of Trustees' spring meeting it approved to add a bachelor of science of nursing to the institution's degree offerings and to add men's and women's lacrosse teams to the intercollegiate athletic program.

The proposed four-year program, also approved by the faculty of the institution, stems from Mount Union's strategic initiative to build a curriculum for the future, with a particular focus on health-related programs.  It also meets the five criteria the University has established for new programs - it is mission compatible, draws sufficient student interest, provides significant career opportunities for graduates, enhances or maintains the current academic profile of the student body and is fiscally responsible. The University expects to launch the program in fall 2013.

Starting in the fall of 2011 lacrosse will be offered as a club sport, with men's and women's varsity competition beginning in 2012-13. Searches for head coaches of both teams will start immediately, and once hired, those coaching staffs will spend the 2011-2012 Academic Year recruiting.
