Mentor Coach Spotlight
Pen-Pen

We are proud to recognize 2013 Mentor Coach and Mentor Leadership Council (MLC) member Pen-Pen Chen. Pen-Pen is President/CEO of Penguistic Solutions as well as a Bilingual Speech and Language Pathologist in the NYC Department of Education. While Pen-Pen and her Fellow Melissa have different industry interests, their personalities are a great fit. Pen-Pen has encouraged her Fellow Melissa to explore her interests and to step out of her comfort zone, to get more involved with different organizations, and to think outside the box and not to be afraid of creative solutions. To this end, Melissa was recently accepted into a study abroad program in Italy next semester.

Pen-Pen recently led a NYNY workshop breakout session entitled "Pronunciation with Pen-Pen" which assisted native and non-native English speakers with articulation and empowering effective communication through improved pronunciation skills. The session was so well received Fellows have requested it for subsequent workshops. As a MLC member she volunteered for their annual MBA Panel event, which had more than 150 attendees. In the spirit of building community, she will also be leading a table tennis event this spring.

We are so lucky to have Pen-Pen as a 2013 Mentor Coach and are incredibly thankful for Pen-Pen's dedication to our program.

Happy Thanksgiving NYNY Family!

We are very thankful for all of our Fellows, volunteers and other supporters, who are instrumental in our fight for economic mobility!

November has been an exciting month! On November 3rd, NYNY Founder and Board Chair Robert Reffkin and Team NYNY completed the ING New York City Marathon. The marathon was Robert's 50th and last in his effort to run a marathon in each state to raise money for nonprofits that support the youth, including New York Needs You. We are incredibly proud of Robert and all of Team NYNY for this accomplishment. After the marathon, Team NYNY, their family, friends, NYNY staff and board members gathered at 48 Lounge for an evening of celebration and championing of the work of NYNY and New Jersey Needs You. Guests were treated to hors d'oeuvres, an open bar and live music, and heard from Robert and me about our marathon journey!

I want to thank NJNY Board Members, Kate and Zak DeOssie, who hosted a fantastic party on our behalf on November 11th. The party was hosted in Hoboken, and attendees heard from NJNY Executive Director Pauly Rodney, and two NJNY Fellows Anthony and Miriam, who shared their history and spoke about how NJNY has propelled them forward in their career exploration. Special guests included Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, and a number of New York Giants players, including Eli Manning, Steve Weatherford, Bear Pascoe, Cooper Taylor, Jim Cordle and Mike Herzlich. We are very grateful that Kate and Zak opened up their home to us and allowed us to spread the word about the powerful work that NJNY does. We raised more than $24,000 from the night!

Please join us at the annual Mentor Coach Holiday Party, which will be held at the Jazz Room at the General (199 Bowery) on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 8:00 PM.  Details can be found at the link below:
