Fellow Spotlight
Donya

Donya is a 2012 Fellow currently attending Lehman College and majoring in computer science and mathematics, with hopes of attending law school. At Lehman, Donya is an active Community Volunteer as well as a NYNY Fellow Ambassador. This summer, she was an IS Support intern at Weil, Gotshal, & Manges LLP. Recently, Donya was awarded a Jewish Foundation for Education of Women scholarship.

Mentor Coach Spotlight
Melanie

NYNY is happy to recognize 2012 Mentor Coach, Melanie Carr, for the outstanding support she's given to her Fellow, Kay, and the NYNY community. She is a self-employed consultant, investigator, and mitigation specialist, and has worked with Kay in his successful transition to City College from Queensborough Community College. Melanie has even gone to visit Kay in Washington D.C. this summer where he was interning at the White House in the Office of National Drug Control Policy. During our 2013 Mentor Coach recruitment efforts, she was selected as one of our Industry Ambassadors and introduced many great candidates to us. At workshops, Melanie has taken on many leadership roles to facilitate activities and support the other Fellows and Mentor Coaches. Thank you, Melanie!

Dear friends of NYNY,

As we welcome the fall, we have a number of events and programming updates to share with you:

  • Our 2014 Fellows Program application is live! Please refer any students who you feel are great candidates here for more information on eligibility and selection criteria.
  • We are hosting a Clothing Day for our Fellows at our September 7th workshop. If you have professional clothing and accessories in good condition that you would like to donate, or if you are interested in volunteering, please contact NYNY Volunteer and Alumni Coordinator Kristine Chin at [email protected].
  • Robert Reffkin, Founder and Board Chair of NYNY, will be running the ING New York City Marathon on November 3rd - his 50th and the culmination of his efforts to run a marathon in each state to raise money for nonprofits such as New York Needs You. He will be joined by "Team NYNY," a group of runners comprised of Mentor Coaches, volunteers and staff representing NYNY and New Jersey Needs You (NJNY), who have each pledged to raise $10,000 for our programs.
  • NYNY's Career Development Program (CDP) will host industry-specific panels and networking this fall and winter for students at Borough of Manhattan Community College, Hostos Community College, LaGuardia Community College, and Stella and Charles Guttman Community College.  If you are interested in being a panelist, or if you'd like more information on CDP, please contact NYNY Chief Program Officer Marianna Tu at [email protected].

Finally, thank you to all who participated in our first Field Day! It was great to bring our community together for a fun day of sports and competition.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Harris

Chief Executive Officer
America Needs You

Run for Team NYNY at the 2013 ING New York City Marathon!

Team New York Needs You is hitting the pavement at the 2013 ING NYC Marathon on November 3rd, which will mark our Founder Robert Reffkin's 50th marathon! Robert is running 50 marathons in 50 states to raise $1 million for NYNY and other nonprofits. We are still looking for a few good men and women to lace up for our cause on Sunday, November 3rd. If you or someone you know is interested in joining Team NYNY, please email Sara Williams ([email protected]) for information. Please visit the NYNY Crowdrise page to learn more about our runners and our programs.

After the marathon, please join us for an after party from 7pm to 9pm at 48 Lounge (1221 Avenue of the Americas at 48th Street) to celebrate our runners' accomplishments. Tickets will be $100 and include appetizers and drinks. Please contact Sara Williams if you are interested in purchasing tickets.

Fried Frank Earns NYNY's Game Changer Award!

NYNY is thrilled to announce Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP as the winner of the Game Changer Award, a quarterly award to celebrate corporate partners who go above and beyond for NYNY. Fried Frank has been a generous supporter of NYNY's 2011 and 2012 Benefit Dinners, and we are fortunate enough to have Ian Schwartz, Corporate Partner at Fried Frank, serve on our Governing Board. With Ian's support, Fried Frank has hosted multiple workshops for the NYNY Fellows Program and, more recently, opened up their space for a New Jersey Needs You workshop. We are proud to recognize Fried Frank this quarter and thank them for their support!

Donate to NYNY's Fall Clothing Day!
Help us prepare Fellows for their upcoming interviews, internships, and career events by donating new and gently-used professional clothing and accessories, especially for the fall/winter season. We are currently accepting items at our office.

NYNY's Mentor Leadership Council Hosts First Field Day!
Fellows, Mentor Coaches, and alumni gathered for our inaugural Field Day on July 27th in Central Park, bringing together a huge swath of the NYNY family. From an epic game of capture-the-flag to a tug-of-war showdown between Fellows and Mentor Coaches, Field Day brought out the competitive edge in everyone. We'd like to extend a special thanks to our sponsors Red Rabbit, Cup & Compass, and iMentor, who provided food, drinks and sporting equipment - as well as members of the Mentor Leadership Council who were fantastic referees. We look forward to seeing everyone at Field Day next summer!
