NYNY Spotlight
Maria is a 2012 Fellow currently studying at Hunter College. Raised in Greenpoint in a predominately Polish community, she embodies the values of hard work in order to accomplish her dreams. Maria intends to major in economics, but is interested in philosophy and languages. She finds traveling to be an incredible learning experience, and plans to study abroad frequently. Maria has already studied abroad while at Hunter, visiting Italy. Next spring, Maria will spend her time in Montpellier, France as a part of a semester study abroad program.
Mentor Spotlight
Darryn
This month we are happy to recognize 2012 Mentor Coach, 101% Society member and Mentor Leadership Council (MLC) member Darryn Lee. Darryn, an Analyst in the Portfolio Analytics Group at BlackRock, became involved with NYNY first as a Career Coach in 2011 before becoming a Mentor Coach in 2012. He has been working closely with his Fellow, Donaven, and has also been working to provide career exposure and professional development opportunities for the entire network of Fellows. When 18 NYNY Fellows were invited to meet the CEO of BlackRock, Darryn held a conference call to answer Fellows' questions about the company, shared supplemental materials and offered to speak with Fellows on an individual basis. He is continuing to provide specific advice to Fellows as they apply for internships. Fellows have been very appreciative of Darryn's support as he has helped them make the most of this opportunity. Thank you, Darryn!

Dear friends of NYNY,
It has been another amazing year for New York Needs You! Here's what we've been able to accomplish together:
- 94% of 2010 and 2011 Fellows seeking internships successfully secured a summer 2012 placement. 71% of those eligible for a returning internship or full-time offer received one.
- Some 2012 Fellows have already secured internships
- Many Fellows who started in community colleges have been accepted into four-year colleges and universities including Columbia, New York University, Boston University, Baruch College, and City College
- Our Career Development Program had a successful initial pilot at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, the New Community College, and Baruch; we are poised for even greater impact through technology
- The Young Leadership Board raised the bar at their Spring Fundraiser in April, hosting 700 guests and raising an astounding $125,000
- Our annual Benefit Dinner honored Bruce Mosler, Raymond McGuire and Sean Combs and raised $1.7 million
- New Jersey Needs You is successfully replicating our Fellows Program
Thank you to our volunteers, Board, donors and staff for all of their great work this year. Your commitment and service continue to propel our organization forward. We are immensely grateful that you continue to believe in us and share our work with your friends, families and networks.

NYNY Thanks Teach For America!
|
|
New York Needs You is grateful for its partnership with Teach For America (TFA), a nonprofit which works to help end educational inequity. TFA is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates and professionals who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural low-income communities and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. As part of this partnership, NYNY introduced Fellows and Mentor Coaches to TFA's career-development opportunities, and TFA hosted two Career Days and engaged their extensive alumni network to help NYNY identify talented new staff members and volunteers. TFA is also creating a full-time paid summer internship for an NYNY Fellow. NYNY is thankful for the TFA professionals who volunteer, including Mentor Coach Katie Kaplun (Class of 2010 and 2012) and the Mentor Leadership Council's Hillary Wool (2011 Class). The next TFA application deadline is January 11th.
