PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Parents and Students,

We are midway through the first nine weeks and there is a lot going on at Coleman!

Student progress reports were sent home on Friday, September 18th. Please review your child's progress report and make sure to sign it and return it as soon as possible. If you desire a conference with your child's teachers, please make sure you note it on the progress report when you send it back with your child. Conference Night will be held on Thursday, September 24th, with scheduled conferences being held from 5:30 - 7:30 PM.

Girls and Boys Basketball began this past Wednesday and both won decisively against Madison. We are playing our big rival Wilson MS this Thursday, Sept 24th at Wilson starting at 6 pm.  Cobra athletes are practicing hard to prepare for the battle and as always they appreciate fan support cheering them on to victory.

On a safety note, I am seeing quite a few students that are bicycle riders and they are "Not" wearing their helmets per Florida Bicycle Safety Laws 316.2065 (individuals under 16 years of age must wear a helmet when operating a bicycle).  We have given helmets and verbal warnings.  Starting Monday, I am instructing Officer Lucas to start writing official citations to students who are not wearing helmets when operating their bicycles and these students will be fined.  Please take this opportunity to keep your child safe and purchase them a bicycle helmet if they are riding their bicycles to school.  If a voucher is needed for a bicycle helmet, please contact the front office or Officer Lucas.  It takes only one fall or accident to change someone's life forever.

In order to keep the campus secure and our students safe, everyone is required to report to the main office to obtain a visitor's pass and to sign the visitor's log. Photo identification is required. If you are signing out a student during the day, you must have photo identification and be listed on the emergency card before the child is called from class and released to you.

I would also like to welcome our newest SAC members:  April Neil, Anthony Cortese and Ron Ford.  We welcome your input in helping us make Coleman an outstanding middle school for our students and community.

As always, if you have any concerns please feel free to contact the school at 872-5335. Our goal is the success and safety of every child. We always encourage parental involvement.

Yours in Education,

Mike Hoskinson
PTSA PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Hello!

Thank you to all of the parents who attended our PTSA meeting and Inside Scoop last night.  Coleman is so fortunate to have involved parents!  Special thanks also goes to our fantastic Guidance Counselors, Mrs. Morter and Ms. Wicker for providing our new parents with some valuable information about middle school.  I've been at Coleman for four years and still learned something new!

If you are looking for specific forms, the PTSA calendar, or contact information for a committee chair, please visit the Coleman PTSA website.  It's the best place to start for most of your PTSA needs.  Additionally, for the most current information, follow us on facebook!  See below for more information.

Finally, thank you so much to the businesses and families who have donated to the school.  None of our efforts are possible without your help!  Thanks to your support, the PTSA has already started funding mini-grants for deserving school projects.  We are also fortunate to have so many parents who have offered to volunteer their time on various committees and projects.  You ALL make the difference in our students' lives.  THANK YOU!

Best,
Jen Carlstedt
PTSA President

NAVIGATING THE NET
Most parents are aware of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Technically, children under the age of 13 are not allowed to have an account on any of these sites. However, some parents make the conscious decision to allow their children to have an account once they start middle school. Since these sites have passwords, many parents believe they can keep an eye on their children and their friends by knowing their passwords and monitoring their accounts. This is true and a great place to start. However, this will only work if parents stay vigilant with their monitoring. If you see something unacceptable, please have a conversation with your child. If you see another child putting themselves in a compromising position, please let their parents know or someone you trust at school. We all need to work together to protect our kids.

In addition to the "known" apps there are new ones appearing every day. Many of them tout the ability for pictures and texts to disappear. These apps provide the user with a false sense of security and may lead to serious consequences. For example, Snapchat pictures can be saved via screenshots or someone else taking a picture or video of the screen. Please make sure your students are aware of this and remind them that nothing should be posted on a temporary app that they wouldn't want posted on a billboard. In addition to Snapchat, there are several new apps that promise anonymity or temporary messages. They are listed in this article from  CommonSenseMedia.org - APPs to KNOW.

Please take a look and educate yourself on what your kids have access to.

Social Media is everywhere and a part of everyday life for our students. This new Chronicle section is designed to provide parents with the latest information on social media.

If you come across an article that you think could benefit other parents, please forward a copy to Jen Carlstedt and we will try to include it in an upcoming edition. Thank you!

PTSA MEMBERSHIP

PTSA Logo

Thank you to everyone who has already joined the PTSA this year and a big thank you to those who attended our first PTSA Meeting of the year!

Please take an active role in your child's education by joining Coleman's PTSA.  Your membership will provide support for various school programs like Student of the Month, Mini-grants that allow our teachers to pick projects they would like to see implemented, and Staff Appreciation. Your membership also helps promote education and student-related causes both at the state and national levels.  PTSA is member driven.  While we rely on volunteers and encourage everyone to get involved, your membership does not obligate you to volunteer your time; it simply says you care about your child's education and that you recognize the impact of a strong PTSA at their school.

Students put the "S" in PTSA!  Have your students join along with you. Our first student member incentive day will be Friday, October 2so please send your membership application in as soon as you can.  Your child must be an individual member to receive the treat, so please have your student join to enjoy the member benefits!

Membership is only $6 per person.  If you have any questions regarding PTSA membership, please contact Kristy Hines.

Student Government

Dear Parents,

This year will be an exciting year for the Student Government Association 2015-2016.  We are going to start this year off Pink.  That's right PINK!  In celebration, and memory, of those who had breast cancer, Coleman will be changing our colors from Gold and Black to Pink and Black.  Each participating teacher will have a newly decorated classroom door for the up-in-coming breast cancer awareness walk.  These doors will be decorated in Pink with a picture and a short story of people(s) who have battled breast cancer.

If you, your family, or any person has been impacted by breast cancer, please feel free to send me their name, a short biography, and a photograph of those people(s).  We will use this information for our "Turn Coleman Pink".

Finally, Mrs. Harvey will be hosting a team called "Coleman's Rack Pack."  As a school, we will be walking on Saturday, October 24th.  You can click the following link Making Strides Sign Up to sign up.  Our Goal, with the help of you, will be to make a team of 100 people to walk with Coleman.  With your help, SGA, and the staff at Coleman, we will make this goal happen.

Please feel free to email me at Robert.pechacek@sdhc.k12.fl.us

Thank you for your support,

Mr. Pechacek (Mr. P)
