NEW for Low Flow Dosing

Mini CORI-FLOW™ Series ML120

Bronkhorst USA Inc. is proud to announce the availability of their new mini CORI-FLOW™ Series ML120 Coriolis Mass Flow Meters and Controllers for (ultra) low flow ranges.

The instruments were designed to provide the user with highly stable, accurate and repeatable mass flow in advanced research or production processes. ML120 offers flow ranges from 50 mg/h to 200 g/h, measured with an accuracy as high as 0.2 percent of reading.

Cost Savings by Dosing at Low Flow Rates

A customer within the field of specialty chemicals was unaware that low to ultra-low flow control was possible and so was taking a vital raw ingredient, mixing it with water to create a carrier volume, and then metering and dosing it into the main product flow.

This process added cost to the production method and, as the dilution step added variability to the concentration of the additive, the product quality was often compromised with a resulting additional cost of re-work to the rejected product.

Furthermore, the final process step saw the bulk material being heated and stirred to evaporate the added water to reduce volume and increase concentration. The energy requirement to do so was significant and the operational stock-holding was high. Additional complications were added by the need for the "dosing system" to handle multiple additive doses with stringent cleaning needed between batches resulting in yet more waste and high additional cost.

A New Business Unit
Bronkhorst Solutions

Bronkhorst® announces the formation of a new business unit, Bronkhorst Solutions, created to meet the changing needs of our customers.

The new group is resourced and ready to work closely with customers on applications which incorporate Bronkhorst mass flow and/or pressure instruments but also require additional functionality.

Contact Bronkhorst USA to discuss your application.

Chemical Resistance

Idea

Mass flow meters and controllers are designed to measure and control the flow of various gases and liquids. In many applications a "jack of all trades" elastomeric seal, such as Viton® flouroelastomer, is used with no chemical compatibility issues. Many customers never even think about their elastomeric seal options. However there are also many applications where the gas or liquid is more aggressive and would cause chemical compatibility issues with a Viton® seal; issues such as elastomeric swelling or elastomeric breakdown.

Kalrez There are other elastomeric seal choices available, such as Kalrez® and EPDM. The selection of elastomeric sealing material for our instruments must be based on chemical resistance at operating conditions. Bronkhorst has gathered a lot of information about the compatibility of various compounds and we can advise our customers accordingly.

Another area to be aware of for chemical resistance is the body and sensor material of the instrument. Stainless steel is a common body and sensor material, but applications with particularly aggressive chemicals may require a Hastelloy sensor, or a sensor coated for higher chemical resistance.

In conjunction with the advice from Bronkhorst, two useful web sites for helping you decide which elastomeric seal or sensor material are appropriate for your application are the Cole-Parmer Chemical Compatibility Database and the DuPont Chemical Resistance Guide.
