Holiday Message From Our Chair!
Holidays are a time for family and friends, sharing meals, and giving gifts. It can be a busy time as well, while we work to tie up end of year responsibilities while also taking time off for the holidays. This year, I am looking forward to hosting Thanksgiving for many friends and family members, watching my 1 and 4 year old boys open gifts at Christmas, and enjoying other Holiday events and traditions. But as Manager for a Water Treatment Plan, I always carry a phone with me over the holidays in case I am needed at work.
Many years ago I remember a holiday as a Water Treatment Plant Operator when I was scheduled to work the night shift on Thanksgiving week. Rather than spend Thanksgiving alone because I had to work, we opted to host Thanksgiving for our out-of-town extended family. My Husband and I were living in a very tiny house at the time, but my family was happy to pack in as houseguests for the week. I left for work about 10PM the night before Thanksgiving, and brought the ingredients for my homemade cranberry salad, so I could assemble it if I had some extra time during the night.
My shift ended at 7AM Thanksgiving morning, and I went home, (with cranberry salad in hand!) to catch a few hours of sleep before getting up to cook the rest of Thanksgiving dinner. My family enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving together that evening, and I returned to work that night, to operate the Water Treatment Plant for another shift. Although it was wonderful to spend the Holiday with friends and family, I also had a commitment to help keep the water flowing for the City and my week passed in an exhausted blur. This was the story for many holidays to come during the 5 years that I worked as a shift Operator.
I tell this story not to complain about those days, but to highlight what the Holidays mean for many water professionals in our Section. The Holidays are a time for family, and community, however we also know that the provision of safe reliable water must continue through this time and it means that many of you are going to work, or are on standby duty and ready to come in to work if called, so that we can continue to provide water service to the community.
Water is a profession that never closes its doors, and never turns off the tap, and I want to commit my Holiday Thanks to all of the individuals that work through the Holidays to make this happen.
May you have a wonderful Holiday season this year wherever you are, and whatever you are doing. Thank you all for your membership in AWWA!

Ballot Correction!
Keep an eye on your mailbox for the Section Ballot and cast your vote for Oregon/Idaho Trustee - Todd Heidgerken and Brian Murphy; Washington Trustee - Cheryl Capron, John Roth and Ray West; Trustee At-Large - Lacey Goeres, Corie Peterson and Stephanie Raddatz; and Chair-Elect - Jason Canady, Laurie Fulton and John Wiskus.
Ballot Correction: The Education/Awards portion of Oregon/Idaho Trustee candidate Todd Heidgerken's bio on the ballot is incorrect. It should read:
"I have a degree in Agricultural and Resource Economics from Oregon State University. My initial work in the water sector started in 1993 while working for a non-profit organization that represented farmers and ranchers on water issues. This work at the "grass roots" level provided me with useful background on water resources, their use and value to different interests. This experience has enabled me to be a thoughtful spokesperson for my utility and other water providers, since 1999 when my focus shifted to drinking water issues. I was pleased to be recognized by the Oregon Office of Environmental Public Health for "Outstanding Leadership in Support of Safe Drinking Water". I have also completed the Pacific Program for State and Local Government Executives."
His bio is correct in the Fall Edition of Water Matters.
Shape the future of the Section by casting your vote for its leadership. Ballots must be post marked by December 31, 2012 to be counted on January 11, 2013. |
