From the Director's Desk Election Day is right around the corner and we need your support now more than ever!
Voter turnout for town elections is historically low and the library building project has to receive a 60% majority vote in order to pass. If you want to see this project come to fruition; want a much bigger children's department; a larger teen department; a business/IT center; quiet study rooms; after-hours meeting room access; nearly double the parking spaces, we absolutely need you to vote for them on March 10. If you aren't yet registered to vote, just bring a valid photo ID and you can register on site. Voting will take place from 6 a.m.-8 p.m. at Milford Middle School (33 Osgood Road). For more information about the project, consider attending our Open House on Sunday, March 8th from 3-5 p.m. or see www.wadleighlibrary.org/building. Many thanks for your support! ~ Michelle Sampson, Library Director

Tuesday, March 3 6:30 p.m.
From mold-breaking saloon owners to current day cocktail mavens women have had a vital, though often overlooked, impact on the evolution of bars and cocktails. Boston and New York members of LUPEC - the Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails- will present an inspiring history of ladies like Ada Coleman, former Head Bartender of the Savoy Hotel and Helen David, who opened the Brass Rail Bar in the midst of the Great Depression. The alcohol-influenced social changes that took place during Prohibition and WWII will be addressed, as well as modern-day first ladies of bartending who are innovating behind the stick today. With the spirit and wit specific to lady barkeeps, we will celebrate the women that have influenced cocktail history.

Glenn Knoblock explores the fascinating history of New Hampshire's beer and ale brewing industry from Colonial days, when it was home- and tavern-based, to today's modern breweries and brew pubs. Unusual and rare photos and advertisements document this changing industry and the state's earliest brewers, including the renowned Frank Jones. A number of lesser-known brewers and breweries that operated in the state are also discussed, including the only brewery owned and operated by a woman before the modern era. Illustrations present evidence of society's changing attitudes towards beer and alcohol consumption over the years. Whether you're a beer connoisseur or a "tea-totaler", this lecture will be enjoyed by adults of all ages.
