Treasure from the Isles of Shoals: How New Archaeology is Changing Old History
Tuesday, April 8
7 p.m.

There is treasure here but not the pirate kind. Scientific "digs" on Smuttynose Island are changing New England history. Archaeologist Nathan Hamilton has unearthed 300,000 artifacts to date on this largely uninhabited rock at the Isles of Shoals.

Evidence proves prehistoric Native Americans hunted New Hampshire's only offshore islands 6,000 years ago. Hundreds of European fishermen split, salted, and dried valuable Atlantic cod here from the 1620s. "King Haley" ruled a survivalist kingdom here before Thomas Laighton struck tourist gold when his family took over the region's first hotel on Smuttynose. Laighton's daughter Celia Thaxter spun poetic tales of ghosts and pirates.

J. Dennis Robinson, a longtime Smuttynose steward, explores the truth behind the romantic legends of Gosport Harbor in this colorful show-and-tell presentation.

This program is funded by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

Flight of Remembrance:
A World War II Memoir of Love and Survival
Tuesday, April 29
7 p.m.

Flight of Remembrance: A World War II Memoir of Love and Survival is the true narrative of author Marina Kirsch's family's experiences against the backdrop of World War II tragedy and devastation in Latvia, Poland, and Germany.

As World War II recedes into distant memory, great attention is being rightfully focused on the remaining Allied veterans. But what of those who served on the other side? Rolf, the author's father, a young, Latvian aeronauticak engineering student of Baltic German descent, was forced to flee his homeland in 1939 before the first Societ takeover, and the only nation who would take him was Nazi Germany. In 1940 Berlin he meets Lilo, and a love story begins that will endure than 70 years and across two continents.

The author will discuss the book's subject matter, protagonists, inspiration and special research accompanied by World War II era photographs.Books will be available for purchase and signing.
