The Work of 1000
Wednesday, June 12
7 - 8:30 p.m.
Keyes Meeting Room
The Work of 1000 -- a 30-minute documentary complemented by a personal discussion
with the film's central figure, citizen activist Marion Stoddart -- provides a gripping profile of an ordinary person who realized her power to make a difference. The film,The Work of 1000, shares Marion's exhilarating story of her work to clean up the Nashua River, once one of the 10 most polluted rivers in America.

Marion will speak about what local citizens can do to help complete the vision of the Nashua River Watershed Association's Nashua River Greenway Program, which aims to permanently protect a corridor along both banks of the Nashua River, its main tributaries, and its smaller streams.

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, The Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA) and theWork of 1000 Civic Engagement Program are teaming up to offer free educational programs to public libraries in the Nashua River watershed.

A Walk Back in Time: The Secrets of Cellar Holes

Wednesday, June 19
7 p.m.

Keyes Meeting Room

Northern New England is full of reminders of past lives: stone walls, old foundations, a century-old lilac struggling to survive as the forest reclaims a once-sunny dooryard. What forces shaped settlement, and later abandonment, of these places? Adair Mulligan explores the rich story to be discovered in what remains behind.

See how one town has set out to create an inventory of its cellar holes, piecing together the clues in the landscape. Such a project can help landowners know what to do if they have archaeological sites on their land and help stimulate interest in a town's future through its past.

Adair Mulligan has a runaway curiosity about the natural and cultural history of northern New England. Executive director of the Hanover Conservancy, she served for 20 years as Conservation Director of the Connecticut River Joint Commissions.

This program is funded in part by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

Adult Summer Reading

Begins Monday, June 25

To complement this year's theme of Groundbreaking Reads we have scheduled a series of programs that promote ideas surrounding life underground, both human and wildlife, subterranean experiences, and gardening and sustainable agriculture.

"Amid the turmoil after her father's death-decisions to be made, the future of the family farm to be settled-Jane Brox, using her acclaimed "compassion, honesty, and restraint" (The Boston Globe), begins a search for her family's story. The search soon leads her to the quintessentially American history of New England's Merrimack Valley, its farmers, and the immigrant workers caught up in the industrial textile age."    Publishers Summary
