Acoustic Cafe: Mike Agranoff
Mike Agranoff
Mike Agranoff
Saturday, November 17

Main Floor of the Library
Doors Open @ 7 PM

Performance @ 7:30 PM Admission is Free!

A one-of-a-kind folk musician, Mike's prime instrument is the guitar, upon which he shines with intricate fingerstyle arrangements of anything from Tin Pan Alley tunes of the '20s to fiddle tunes to his own music. He also plays concertina, piano, banjo, or sings acapella. He can be uproariously funny, contempletive, and powerfully emotional in the space of a few minutes. The man will capture your attention, and then your heart.

The Acoustic Cafe is a library-sponsored program showcasing regional acoustic musicians. Open to the public, it is held the 3rd Saturday from October thru April in a smoke-free intimate environment. The Acoustic Cafe is also supported by the Friends of the Library. All proceeds from coffee and refreshment sales benefit the café and the library.

Dark Matter and Dark Energy
Wednesday, November 28
7  - 8:30 p.m.
Keyes Meeting Room
Over the past 35 years or so, cosmologists' understanding of the universe has been turned on its head. It is now generally accepted in the scientific community that 'normal matter' -- the matter that we experience in our everyday lives, and that scientists have been studying since the time of the ancient Greeks -- comprises only about 4% of the matter in the universe.  So, what is the other 96%?

Dr. Bryan Higgs will discuss the evidence that has led scientists to these conclusions, and talk about the current theories that may (or may not) explain the observed phenomena.  It will endeavor to do this in a way that is understandable to all.

Dr. Bryan J. Higgs holds a Ph.D. in Experimental Particle Physics from Yale University, but left the field of physics to experience the wonders of computing and its resulting revolution.  Since his retirement, he has returned to reading and learning about what he missed in physics during the intervening years, and enjoys trying to explain all of this to interested laypersons.

Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....

Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.
