Portland Off-Road Cycling
Master Plan Update

by Kelsey Cardwell
Are you quite ready to ride trails in your backyard (and not only an hour's drive away)? The Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability published a questionnaire and they are seeking your input.

Take a couple of minutes to help shape the future of mountain biking in Portland.  Our members have been central in moving the process to where it is today. Help us stay consistent in our message for more and better opportunities to ride locally.

Thanks for your support!

Falls Creek Campout &
Work Party: July 23-24
NWTA, Portland Design Works and Crestline Construction are supporting this year's Falls Creek Trail Work Party + Campout!

Last year, NWTA and Friends of Falls Creek started a reroute of the gravel road section of the  Falls Creek Trail to create a better rider experience.

The reroute is nearly complete, and is our primary goal for this year's party. The final section requires trail building machines to work through the dirt, and volunteers will finish the trail by hand after the machine work.

Double mountain view from the new Falls Creek re-route
Crestline Construction of The Dalles provided a generous donation to help us fund the NEPA process and to make this epic reroute happen.

We'll have work to do on both Saturday and Sunday. Please join us for one or both days for work or for work and riding and camping!

Complete event info and registration can be found here.

We Need Volunteers (You!) To Step Up For St. Helens International Festival Of Trails (SHIFT), and Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day.
Volunteers are needed for our upcoming SHIFT (August 19-21), and Take  A Kid Mtn Bike Day (October 1) events.  Any role, and any level of involvement are really needed and appreciated.

NWTA is an ALL volunteer organization.   Events will need to be scaled to the level of volunteer involvement.  More volunteers = bigger, more successful events.

"Safety Third" Isn't Always
The Best Idea
by Adam Newman

Let's be honest, sometimes the thrill of enjoying the great outdoors is getting ourselves in a little over our head. Pushing ourselves and our bikes to the limit is one of the things that draws us to the trails. But when you're living on the edge, it can be easy to get swept off.

Here's some basic safety tips to keep in mind on your next ride:  Most importantly, tell people where you are going and when you will be back. If something happens and no one knows where you are, no one will find you. And don't ever assume your phone will work.
Next: stay calm. It's easy to make bad decisions in times of stress and make things a lot worse. So you blew up your derailleur in the middle of nowhere? Don't panic. Don't go bushwhacking off trail on some insane shortcut. Even if you have to walk six miles back to the car you'll survive. You'll finish the day with sore feet and a great story to tell.

Let me reiterate: do not ever rely solely on your phone or GPS. Paper maps are lighter and the batteries never die. Skim the map ahead of time and try to at least have some knowledge of the area. Try to know if there are any roads or bail-out points along the way. Check out caltopo.com for free, printable topographic maps of the entire U.S.

Don't go out in the wild without enough fuel. You wouldn't try to drive across a desert without enough gasoline, would you? Don't underestimate the amount of food and water you might need. An extra snack bar is a small burden to carry when the SHTF.
Even in the hight of summer Oregon can be a cold and foreboding place. Bring at least one extra layer than you think you need. My rule of thumb is to have enough layers to be comfortable even if I'm just standing around. Because if you have a major mechanical or an injury, you're going to be doing a lot of standing around. An emergency bivvy is the size of two Clif Bars and could easily save the day.

It's not just you out there. You may find yourself called upon to assist a fellow rider or another person enjoying the trail. They could be hurt, bonked or lost. If you're riding in a group, assume you might have to be responsible for everyone. If each person in the group prepares that way, you should have your bases covered.
Have some kind of first aid kit with you at all times, even if it's just some sterile gauze and tape. Latex or nitrile gloves are essential for assisting others with their injuries too. If you run across someone with a serious injury, remember the ABCs: Airway, Breathing and Circulation.

Hopefully you never need to follow any of these guidelines, but if you spend enough time in the woods you'll eventually need one or more of them. Stay safe out there.
