SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETER NEEDED
Are you a social media maven? Great at story telling, and creating excitement?
If so, NWTA can use your help in marketing and promoting our events.

NWTA has many talented leaders who are organizing events and trail projects, and we need help letting our membership (and the rest of the world) know what we're doing.
If this interests you, email Ted tedd@nw-trail.org

FUND RAISING COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Volunteers are needed for the Fund Raising Committee; especially volunteers to help submit applications for grants to fund a wide range of projects.

Grant writing is a simple process because we have all the information you need.   We just need volunteers to help submit the applications.
This is a short-term commitment (January-March).

NWTA has big plans for 2016 and we need your help raising the funds for events and trail projects such as:
  • A NEW mtb trail project (S. Stub Expansion, 8-10 miles of new trail)
  • Take A Kid Mountain Biking
  • Trail Patrol Program
  • Stub Fest 2017
Funding for our projects is available, we just need to apply for it.

If you can help, email Ted at tedd@nw-trail.org

NWTA Bike Patrol consists of dedicated volunteers partnering with land mangers, landowners and emergency personnel to assist, educate and inform all trail users in order to enhance their recreational experience.

Trail Patrol is open to ALL ages and skill levels of adult riders.

You are perfect fit for the Bike Patrol if you like to:
  • Ride your bike
  • Help other people
  • Be involved in the management of your local trails
  • Learn about outdoor first aid, trailside bike repair, off-road riding and trail-use education.
Contact Lee Duncan (leeman.duncan@gmail.com) if you are interested in learning more.

STUB STEWART BUILD DAYS
This is a recurring event and the first build day will start  Sat, Oct 17, 2015, and repeat every other Saturday until state trails day (Saturday, June 4, 2016).  See our calendar for details and updates (including cancellations)

2015 Northwest Trail Alliance Treasurer's Report
The Northwest Trail Alliance had total 2015 revenues of $64,311. Major revenue sources included $15,496 from membership dues; up significantly from 2014.  We also received $21,543 in total donations, including $10,153 in corporate donations, and $5,530 in individual gifts.  Additionally, the NWTA received $12,188 from ongoing grants; primarily the 2014 Recreational Trails Program grant which is funding ongoing trail development at Stub Stewart State Park.

The NWTA had total 2015 expenses of $60,872.  Some of the most significant expenses are our organization's insurance costs, which totaled $14,560.  Of this sum, our liability insurance alone accounted for $9,181 in insurance expense.  Other major expenses include $9,815 sent to the IMBA-operated Sandy Ridge Fund.  This donation was made possible by revenue raised from our ongoing Sandy Ridge Shuttle Days.  Our largest expense category is Trail Care and Development, which included $12,594 spent on labor related to Stub trail projects (made possible by the 2014 RTP Grant).  Also, in this category, the NWTA spent $4,893 on trail structures and signage; primarily stone for trail building, and trail counters.

The NWTA is happy to report that we ended our fiscal year with positive net income of $3,439.  As of December 31, 2015, the NWTA had total cash of $44,280, negligible accounts receivable, and total fixed assets of $141,480 (related primarily to our trail building machinery).  In summation, the Northwest Trail Alliance ended 2015 with total assets of $186,105.

New Trail Development In
Stub Stewart State Park
(correction from December 2015 newsletter)
In our December 2015 newsletter, NWTA announced that planning has begun for new single track trails in a currently undeveloped portion of Stub Stewart State Park (South Stub-MTB Phase 2).

In our reporting, we neglected to recognize two important NWTA volunteers who have dedicated countless hours to building and maintaining the trails at Stub:  Joe Rykowski and Robert Clark.

Robert Clark, in addition to volunteering for many years as the lead NWTA trail steward on the cross-country trail work at Stub, has also dedicated many weekends to scouting the new "South Stub" area, and led the initial scouting party through the area.

Joe Rykowski has been serving as a volunteer trail builder at Stub since 2007, and is currently serving as the NWTA volunteer equipment operator and liason between the park and various build crews working at Stub.

Thanks to Robert and Joe!

2015 Volunteer Hours
by Charlie Biggs
I am happy to report that we are a busy club!

In 2015, as an organization, and with the help of many supporters in the mountain biking community in and around Portland, we contributed 5944 volunteer hours building and maintaining trails in our region.

These are just hours dedicated to trail care and do not include all the hours that are volunteered in the name of advocacy and outreach. They do, however, include planning, meetings with land managers, scouting, and travel times to and from work sites.

If it seems like a healthy number, it might be because of a generous allowance that Jim Lemonds, Steward and King of Growlers Gulch, has given us through the trail work that he masterfully organizes and executes.  Events that are attended by many NWTA members. But even without that influence, NWTA has had an impressive turnout at our sponsored events.

It is amazing when you think about the combined effort the MTB community puts into creating, enhancing, and protecting the trails we love to ride.  Our 2015 total doesn't include the volunteer hours of our sister mountain bike groups, such as HRATS, Cold Creek, GOATS, Team Dirt, DOD, COTA and Evergreen.  It kind of blows your mind to think about the total volunteered hours for the Pacific North West region, and the amount of trail work that gets done.

Regardless of who gets the credit, there is a lot of momentum, and a lot of folks in the mountain biking community that want to help.
