"The hardest part of raising a child is teaching them to ride bicycles. A shaky child on a bicycle for the first time needs both support and freedom. The realization that this is what the child will always need can hit hard."

Stubfest Event: A HUGE Success!

Have you heard of LL Stub Stewart State Park ("Stub," for short)? Stub is just 34 miles west of Portland, and hosts an enviable variety of recreational opportunities for campers, hikers, equestrians, and off-road cyclists! The park is comprised of 1,800 acres of rolling hills, forest glades, and streams, with over 25 miles of trails for a variety of users. The park has a bike-only area which contains over 6 miles of trails designed specifically for mountain bikers of all skill levels, and includes a free ride area, and kid friendly trails. The bike-only area is part of a larger, 15+ mile network, of cycling trails throughout the park. Since 2007, NWTA volunteers have been instrumental in constructing and maintaining these riding opportunities.

On May 2, 2015, over 120 enthusiastic individuals volunteered more than 600 hundred work hours for NWTA's Stubfest event! During the event, our volunteers constructed 2 miles of new trail, and did maintenance work on over 10 miles of existing trail! Thank you volunteers!!!! !!

As part of NWTA's focus on family, our event included group rides for kids and beginners. In addition, we set up a skills course which

provided a unique bike instruction opportunity. For an in depth look at NWTA's impact on the evolution (and future) of mountain biking at Stub, please watch Joe Rykowski's 'Why Stub' presentation from the May 26th NWTA general membership meetingAlso, a big thank you to AJ Murray for his excellent work creating a video recap of Stubfest.
