2014/2015 Board Candidates Announced
I am pleased to announce the recommended candidates to the Board of Directors for 2014/2015. The candidates represent a mix of seasoned board members looking to carry out their second term, as well as new candidates with an impressive background in the cycling industry. Along with the other six seated members, our board of 11 promises to be a dynamic, capable and influential group and I am excited to see what the year ahead brings.

Please take a minute to get to know the candidates below and be sure to make it to our annual elections on January 28, 2014, 7pm at HUB. Remember that you have to be a member to vote. And if you are interested in serving on the board in the future, please contact me.

See you there!

Jon Pheanis, President

And the Candidates are:
Andy Crump
Andy has served on the Board of Director's for two years and is currently the Membership Director for Northwest Trail Alliance.
  • BS Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Oregon State University
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • 24+ years' experience in electronics industry
  • 25+ years of Mountain Biking

Anthony (Tony) Daversa
My name is Anthony Daversa and I am an avid cyclist. Cycling started for me at a young age.  It started with a hand me down bike with a banana seat and training wheels.  The training wheels were short lived and I remember my first taste of true freedom coming the moment I learned to ride my bike on my own.  With the mobility that being able to ride a bike offered came the ability to venture out and explore the world.

Throughout my childhood my bicycle was a valued tool of exploration and transportation. My true passion is riding in the dirt.  I love the forest and the adventures that riding trails provides.  I also love the physical demands and the adrenaline rush that come along with climbing a challenging technical section and ripping an epic downhill.  Over the past 8 years riding my bike has been my passion.  I ride my mountain bike every weekend and love to explore all of the amazing riding the Pacific Northwest has to offer.  I now currently race cross country mountain bikes, cyclocross and short track mountain bikes as  member of OBRA.  I am also co-founder of the Portland based Filth and Fury cycling team.  Cycling, and particularly mountain biking, are a way of life and are ingrained in all that I do.

I joined the NWTA board of directors in 2012.  The past two years have been a tremendous learning opportunity for me and an amazing growth period for the organization.  I look forward to continuing the momentum and getting the opportunity to continue our work to evolve both our organization and our mt. biking opportunities through the development and strengthening of our mt. biking community.

Tyson Hart
My name it Tyson Hart and I own/operate Civilian Bicycle Company. A Portland-based, small-batch production bike brand which focuses on more niche markets - Belt-drive 29er mtb, Single-Speed CX, and IGH Urban bikes. One of my first jobs was turning wrenches and since then I've held just about every job in the industry from bike messenger to shop manager to custom frame builder. Needless to say I have an intimate knowledge of all things bike.

And though I've never met any kind of bike I didn't want to ride, I have been a mountain biker since the sport was invented and prefer dirt to concrete ten to one. Being a native Portlandian it astounds me that we struggle so much to find close-in trail riding. I have ridden all over the western states and have lived in other cities that embrace mountain biking, so I bring a unique perspective to the NWTA.

Dan Jursnick
Dan has served on the Board of Director's for two years and currently serves on NWTA's Executive Committee as board Secretary. Dan previously served as NWTA's Vice President.  Dan is a Principal at CB Two Construction, LLC, a regional construction firm specializing in seniors housing and commercial development.  He serves as a mentor for the Port's Model Mentor/Protégé Program for the Construction Industry, and is also a past President of the Portland chapter Construction Financial Management Association, an industry trade association (www.cfma.org).  Dan has been a passionate mountain bike rider for the last two decades.

Patrick Loftus
My name is Patrick Loftus and my passion for mountain bikes started in Arizona in the summer of 1994.  That fall my dad took my little brother and I out of school for a week to drive to Vail for the '94 World Cup and I've been hooked ever since.  In those 19 years I've ridden all over the west and witnessed the successes and failures of shared trail networks and user group conflicts.  I currently work at the Community Cycling Center where I schedule the bike shop, hire and train new mechanics, participate in fund-raising activities, such as donor stewardship, event planning, in kind donations, and leading fund-raising in the Bike Shop during seasonal campaigns.  While my enthusiasm for bikes goes beyond the trail, that's where it all started.  With my passion for mountain bikes, transportation advocacy, and experience with bicycle nonprofits I believe I'm an excellent candidate for a position on the Northwest Trail Alliance Board of Directors.

Westside Trail Updates
Stub Stewart -- NWTA is renewing adopt-a-park agreement with Oregon Parks & Recreation Department for 2014-2015 trail construction at Stub Stewart State Park.    Rob Clark (RobC@nw-trail.org) has been our volunteer trail leader on the ground since 2011 and has been doing great things!   Joe Rykowski (JoeR@nw-trail.org) is leading bike patrol volunteer aspect for what we do at Stub Stewart State Park.

Hagg Lake -- Washington County has approved a new trail route near Boat Ramp C proposed by NWTA trail volunteers which will bypass a low laying trail (un-ridable much of the wet season) and add trail so you won't have to cut through the parking lot to get back on trail.   Park ranger gave the greenlight on January 16th for NWTA to "flag and break ground whenever" and will be paying for rental of NWTA's ST240 Single Track and SK755 Ditch Witch machines.   Trail volunteers will be completing terrain scouting and selecting drainage crossing locations over the next few weeks including rough flagging route and shooting the grades... with aim to begin moving dirt as soon as feasible (soil condition/weather permitting).

Option #1 is the route approved for construction (the Option #2 was not feasible due to what would be involved to cross the arterial road as well as possible conflict with private property owner access roads).

5 Minute Advocacy Opportunity

Imagine throwing some gear on your bike, camping in two ride in only campgrounds and being in Post Canyon within a short weekend. All without getting into your car or truck.

Travel Oregon and the Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway are supporting research to analyze the benefits of the bicycle enhancements in the Columbia River Gorge. The improvements include a new trail segment between Wyeth and Starvation creek and completion of a segment between Viento State Park and Hood River. Both segments would move us closer to the opportunity to "Ride to where we Ride."

The information you provide is not available from any other source and will be a vital part of the research project. Your responses will be used for research purposes only and will be kept strictly confidential.
