Be a Leader. Join the NWTA Board of Directors.

NWTA's Board of Directors is the elected body that helps keep the organization moving in the right direction. We plan and approve all projects and events and adopt and administer the budget. There are several vacancies coming up this January and we are looking for a diversity of candidates with different interests and backgrounds. Voting will occur at our January 2014 membership meeting and successful candidates serve two-year terms.

If you've thought about taking your love of mountain biking to the next level and are truly passionate about our mission, there is a spot for you on the Board. Ask any past or present Board member and they'll tell you it's a challenging, but rewarding experience.

For more information, or to express your interest, send us an email with the subject line "Attention Nominating Committee" to info@nw-trail.org.

Riverview Update

The Public Advisory Committee (PAC) for the Riverview Natural Area met for the second time last week.  The goal for the PAC is to assist with developing recommendations for a plan for Portland Parks and Recreation.  The first rough draft of the Concept Plan will be discussed at the next PAC meeting in January.  Ultimately, the decision for how to balance water quality/sustainability with recreation lies with Portland Parks.

This is where you are needed!  The PAC and Portland Parks needs to hear your collective voice.  There is a Community Meeting scheduled for November 12, 2013 at 5:30-7:30 PM.  The meeting will be held at Community Meeting/Open House, PDX Church, 125 SW Miles.  We need all types of mountain bikers represented at this meeting to let them know what you would like to see for a recreation trail plan.  Do you want XC trails?  Do you want advanced trails?  Do you want a beginner loop?  Do you want a variety of trails and difficulty levels so that riders can advance their skills?  It is our time to be proactively engaged in developing a plan for this centrally located natural area, where many of us can Ride to Where We Ride!

Full details for the project can be found at:  http://www.portlandoregon.gov/parks/62001 We have a committed group working hard to bring better access to Riverview.  Please respect their efforts by NOT building trails on your own on the property.  It sends the wrong message about mountain bikers as a user group, and if done in  improperly can negatively impact water quality.  If you see someone building trails, please kindly let them know to be patient and work within the system.

NWTA Bike Patrol and Oregon Equestrian Trails Host Bikes and Horses Meet n' Greet
On Saturday, October 19th, the NWTA's Bike Patrol volunteers got together with Oregon Equestrian Trails (OET) to promote trail safety across user groups by familiarizing horses with the sights and sounds of mountain bikers. The bulk of our time was spent training with OET members' horses. We staged several scenarios with bike riders interacting with horses, creating a controlled opportunity to acclimatize the horse to varying horse/bike situations on trails.  We approached from the front and behind at different speeds, changing gears and using our brakes. The horse riders were very appreciative of the interaction because some of their horses have not been around bikes. Some take-aways: If you see a horse with red ribbon tied on its tail, it's a known kicker, so keep your distance! Also, horses LOVE carrots.  We rewarded them with a carrot each time they had a new encounter with bike, so by end of the group ride the horses had the idea that mountain bikers = carrots = yum! The big takeaway from this training is that all trail users need to communicate and respect each other. We ended the day with a BBQ with other volunteer groups to honor their efforts, put on by the staff of Stub Stewart State Park.

The pictures involve an NWTA trail patrol volunteer and 2 year old Dakota who had never seen/smelled/heard bikes.

Events

Sandy Build Days

With some moisture in the ground, it's time to give back to the trails at Sandy Ridge. Please join Northwest Trail Alliance, the  Bureau of Land Management and the International Mountain Bicycling Association at one of our trail maintenance days this fall/winter/spring.

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped put Flow Motion together last spring with our trail day sponsor, Portland Design Works.  Flow Motion was just named a 2013 Model Flow Trail by IMBA, putting Sandy Ridge on the map, once again, as a destination for top rate mountain bike trails.

To keep the trails tuned up, we're starting out with two dates (November 9/December 14), working on Two Turntables and Flow Motion, respectively. Time is 10a-2p.

Please see the NWTA calendar to sign up for the events:
