Volunteer in a Visible Way

As a non-profit, our mission drives everything we do. That's why our volunteers build, maintain and advocate for more places to ride - it's that simple. Though it may be harder to see there is a lot more to the Northwest Trail Alliance, its volunteers and partners than building, advocacy work and riding.

While we continue to push for trails close to home, we also continue to build the next generation of mountain bikers, outdoor enthusiasts, trail and land stewards in a visible way.  That's why volunteers set-up and take-down the skills course at each Sunday Parkways. We are dedicated to spreading the joy of mountain biking and there is nothing more awesome than seeing the crowds around our tent each month. Just imagine if it was a real trail...

Join us at Colonel Sumners Park this Sunday for Sunday Parkways skills course and good times or to lend a hand (sign up here). As always, we'll be hosting the little shredders- in-training and we'll have the beautiful Veloforma bike being raffled off in late October on display so you can drool a little bit and purchase a ticket(s) .

Also check out the BTA's block party.

Trailfest 2013 is coming! September 20-22

Celebrate Mountain Biking. Trailfest is the Portland region's premiere mountain biking festival that celebrates everything mountain biking: the trails. the people. the culture.

Something for Everyone. Trailfest offers something for everyone: guided rides, shuttled rides, pump track and bike park rides and a great party. Whether you've never ridden, or are an experienced rider, Trailfest is for you.

Most of Trailfest is free all in the hopes of making more mountain bikers. How? Your membership makes it all happen. Your membership is also the main reason there are so many great trails and places to hit the dirt on your bike in the region. Now is a great time to become a member or renew. Its easy and it's affordable: http://nw-trail.org/join. Want more reasons? Check out the fun lineup:

Gateway Green Crowdfunding Opportunity

Gateway Green is a 38-acre plot of unused, partially wooded land in East Portland, where I-84 and I-205 come together.  After years of grassroots efforts and partnerships with local, regional, and state government as well as the private and non-profit sectors, there is an opportunity to transform this neglected asset into a multi-use park, with a focus on off-road bicycling.  If these community groups, citizens, and others can raise the funds to build the park, the City of Portland has agreed to own and operate it. On September 5th, the Friends of Gateway Green will ask everyone who can to contribute money through crowdfunding site Indiegogo to help make the vision for Gateway Green a reality. Crowdfunding is a new opportunity to collectively invest in a great East Portland park, even in amounts as small as $1 or $5 or as large as $1 million! We hope you'll consider helping out with this campaign. You can learn more and keep up to date on their facebook page.  We'll also post a reminder when the Indiegogo campaign kicks off.

Announcements

Friendly Reminder: On shared-use trails, be aware of other users... remember especially that horses can spook (for many different reasons). COMMUNICATE with other trail users!  LISTEN and RESPECT (its part of communicating) to what the horse riders are saying...sometimes there are special requirements depending on temperament/experience of horse/rider.

Tip: We learned from group ride with Oregon Equestrian club...just talking is best thing to do. Let's the horse know you are a human-being. Just saying "hello" is sometimes all that's needed. Communication is very important. Share the trail people!
