Joining Forces
We like to tout our accomplishments-it helps spur more of them. But who really is "we." The NWTA is only as great as the sum of our parts and partnerships. This includes other trail builders such as West Side Trail Federation and Hood River Area Trail Stewards, land managers such as the BLM and the City of Portland, and of course our awesome members and sponsors like you. It truly takes partnerships such as these to make anything happen, even if things may often seem slow or frustrating.
Next month, voters within Portland Metro's boundary will consider passing a parks and natural areas levy (Measure 26-152) which, if successful, will provide funding to pay for care and improvement of Metro parks and natural areas. The NWTA is a proud supporter of the levy. Together with IMBA, we have worked with Metro over a number of years to address potential opportunities for mountain biking on Metro properties.
As mountain bikers, many of us have a strong connection to the outdoors and we value the care that is needed to maintain these areas. But, we also want places to ride. If approved by voters, levy funding will not only help pay for needed maintenance and natural area protection, but funding will also go towards increasing access to mountain biking in the Agency Creek/McCarthy Creek parcels (more information can be found on our website.
You can find out more about the levy on Metro's website or by coming to our April membership meeting to hear directly from a Metro representative.

Scappose-Rocky Point Update - 4/24/2013
Have you ever stood at the top of Heather Canyon peering lustfully over the rope looking at the freshies ready to shred but know the nice guys in the red jacket are nearby? Well that is what is going on at Scappoose and we were informed the South side will be open very soon by the manger. They are moving the equipment out and it is very important not to be in the closed areas or block any of the gates.
So don't be a knuckle head and poach the line until we get official word and distribute it. The people on the Scappose area mailing list will get word first when it opens. To be added to the list send an email to andyc@nw-trail.org.
On a related note, Longview Timber is looking for a new Tree Farm Manager for their property in the Coast Range. If you have a BS in Forestry or Forest Engineering this could be a great job. Applications are due May 3, details can be found here in the Oregonian or we can forward the announcement just email the address above. Imagine the possibilities of managing private timberland at the coast, then getting transferred to Scappose timberland. Or imagine if this happened to your friend, so pass the announcement on if you know someone qualified.
Thank you,
Scappose Trail Steward

Knebal Springs Trail Reroute Open for Comment Open for public comment through April 30th. This project includes a 2 mile trail build to reroute Knebal Springs off of the current forest service roads connecting the existing trial system. The project would also eliminate current trespassing issues into the Dalles Municipal Watershed and would provide a safe recreational experience for all users. To take a look at the plan details go to the USDA description of the plan.
NWTA Speaks at Washington State Conference
In mid April, NWTA presented at the annual Washington Recreation and Parks Association (WRPA) conference in Vancouver, Wa. In front of land management staff and park and recreation professionals from throughout the state, Jon Pheanis (NWTA President) joined together with planners and recreation managers to discuss ways to include mountain biking in community park systems. The panel discussed several new projects including the Ventura Park bike pump track, the Cascade Locks EasyCLIMB trail system and the soon-to-be-built trail system at Swan Creek Park near Tacoma, Wa. Along with appearances at state conferences in Oregon and California earlier this year, NWTA is helping to keep mountain biking at the forefront at home and elsewhere.
