Kells Cinema to reopen
for one-off Show
The old Kells Cinema in Suffolk
Street will re-open its doors for the weekend of Saturday 14th
and
Sunday 15th December. “Polar Express” will be
screened on Saturday
at 3pm and again at the Sunday Matinee at 2pm. For the adults, the
always
popular “Miracle on 34th Street, starring our
own Maureen O'Hara,
will be shown on Sunday at 5pm and 8.30pm The Saturday showing will
mark the 77th.
anniversary of the opening of the cinema. Known and loved by most of us
as the
“Oscar Cinema”, it closed its doors in 1982.
Mr. Ken Murray, chairman of
Kells Local Heroes, advises “This is a once-off weekend and it’s
unlikely to be
repeated in the foreseeable future”. He goes on to say “We are really
grateful
for the generousity of Mrs Marjorie Hoey, whose late husband Paddy ran
Kells
Carpets in the old cinema building, as well as Bank of Ireland in the
town
which has met a significant chunk of our costs, for making this special
occasion happen.”
“Made in
Kells” pop up shop
In the lead up to
Christmas Kells Artists and Craftspeople have come together
to open a pop up shop in Kells on the corner of Market St and Church St.
The shop is
located in a formerly vacant premises which was transformed
by Kells Local Heroes last Summer and the use of the space has been
generously
provided to the Made in Kells group by the building owner. The idea was
supported by Kells & District Chamber and Bank of Ireland as
part of the Enterprise Town
initiative.
Local People and
visitors are welcome to pop in and perhaps find that
Christmas gift or individual work of Art they could treasure .The work
is
uniquely special in that it is “Made in Kells”.
A
stool by Fionn Ferguson, a young craftsperson trained in Letterfrack
furniture
college sits proudly in the window, the piece in maple and cork shows
fine
craftsmanship. A glass piece by Fiona Murphy entitled “catching
raindrops”
catches light and glows with colour. Ian Rogans abstract works
demonstrate a fine
application of an artist’s palette knife. Hats and fascinators by
Monica Feher
are beautifully made and sit side by side with prints and painting.
The work for sale
including cards and prints varies in prices from 2 Euro
and upwards, Kate Flood
provides beautiful
photographic prints of local historic places, her photographs of the
botanical
treasures from Girley bog capture the beauty of nature.
Turned timber
pieces by Connor Ferguson in Spalted Beech and cherry demonstrate
the beauty of the wood. Heather Buchanans Ceramic work has Celtic
echoes in both
their forms and textural surfaces. Paintings, prints and pen and inks
by Gwen O’Sullivan
are both delicate and vibrant. Watercolours of local scenes by Lorraine
Clarke includes
streetscapes of the town. Artisan foods made locally are also
represented by relishes
and chutneys from Maperath Farm.
The
pop up shop will be a creative and
vibrant space for the Christmas Season,
local Artist Patrick Morris will allow visitors see work being created
as he works
on his paintings in situ while his contemplative pieces adorn the walls
of the
space.
The opening last
Saturday was a hive of activity and received a great
response by local people both young and old. “One customer noted that
she’d planned
to visit the craft fair in the RDS next week but didn’t need to now as
she’d
picked up all she wanted in the Made in Kells shop” said Jess Olohan of
Kells
Chamber.
The shop will
open each Friday and Saturday from noon – 6pm in the run up to
Christmas.

Christmas Lights
Kellsonline
recently sent an email to Kells Chamber of
Commerce asking if some of the profits from Kells Hay Festival could be
spent
on funding the Christmas Lights for the town. No reply was received. We
note
from the Meath Chronicle that this festival has received an award for
its
success. We also note from the Chamber newsletter that its members will
be
calling on local businesses to collect funds for the Christmas Lights.
The
“mission” of the Kells Chamber, according to its website, is to
“promote Kells
as a great place to live, work and visit”. Surely funding the lights
would come
under this “mission”. Its website also lists its “mission” to “continue
to lobby
Kells Town Council, Meath County Council and the Government on issues
of
importance to the town”.
Mr. John V.
Farrelly is president of Kells Chamber of
Commerce. He is also Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council. Kellsonline
has
been asked if this is a conflict of interest. As one reader asks, “how
does he
lobby Meath County Council if he is Cathaoirleach of that same body?”
But to be
fair, another says that his position on Meath County Council can only
be an
advantage to the town. You have to make up your own mind. Maybe John
would like
to comment. We will be happy to print any response from him.
Bank Queues
We have all
queued up outside the bank door in the morning
at some stage. The queue can be a long one at times, and when we do
gain entry
we sometimes find there is only one teller to serve this line. Does the
bank
not realise that most of its customers have work to go to? Can they not
ensure
that there will be enough staff to, at least, clear this queue and then
reduce
the staff levels? It would facilitate these workers to return to work
and make
more money to lodge with the same bank, leaving everyone happy.
Beware of
Fraudsters
Some
instances of people’s accounts being tampered with have
been reported. Around this time of year, fraudsters are at their worst.
People
have had their accounts accessed. People tend to use the Internet more
and more
for shopping-on-line. Some people leave too much information online and
this
information can be accessed if the person is not careful enough. Keep
personal
information to a minimum, do not disclose your bank account details or
debit/credit details. If you receive a call from someone who claims to
be
working for your bank, get their details and ring your bank for
confirmation.
Under no circumstances should you disclose any personal information to
someone
you do not know, no matter who they claim to be representing.

Little
Consideration Can Mean So Much
Christmas is a time of cheer for most,
but for some it can
be a lonely and sad time. Those who have lost loved ones during the
year will not
greet Xmas as most would. The empty chair, or chairs, at the Christmas
table
can be heartbreaking. Those who live alone may feel the sadness of
their
solitude most. Make it your business to visit some of these people if
they live
nearby. A simple phone-call can bring great happiness and comfort. Help
and
check on the elderly in your neighbourhood. They need and appreciate
your aid
in whatever form you can supply it. This is a time of giving. Give
simply help
or your time to those that need it. Make it an enjoyable as possible
for as
many as possible.
Continued support
for your local Town Councillors
We are
nearing the end of many Town Councils in all areas of the country. For
so long
these people have given their time, unselfishly and without prejudice,
to their
local communities. This situation can only bring hardship, especially
to the
poorer sections of the community, and those with disabilities, who
depended on
these people to bring their individual circumstances to the responsible
authorities. Kellsonline has absolutely no doubt that these same people
will
still devote their spare time to serving the community in the same way,
irrespective of the disbanding of the councils. It is their nature to
help
people, that’s why you voted them into office in the first place.
So what is
next for these community workers? It is time for us to repay some of
their
kindness and dedication. When next you are asked to vote in County
Council, or
General Elections, remember those that served you so well. The list of
those
involved, presently and in the past, is far too long to print here. You
know
who has helped you and you should repay that service. Most Political
Parties
are represented on your local Town Council. When next you are given a
selection
of names to choose from, give preference to those that you are indebted
to.
When the next
Election, County or General, takes place, all parties will have members
you
have never heard of. There may be people on these lists who have never
served
on local councils but are advertised by Political Parties as their
number one
candidates. Ignore the Party Line, show your support for those that
deserve it.
Remember who came to your aid when you were in need of help. Repay some
of the
massive debt owed to these community workers.

Drain Clearing
Kellsonline has been asking for drains to be cleared for some months
now. Over
the last week we have seen great work carried out on this matter. The
footpaths
in many areas have also been lowered

attended to as needed. Great to see so much industry in the lead-up to

Park
Overall Project Benefits
1.
Provides improved quality of life for the people of Kells and
surrounding
areas.
2.
Potential to attract significant tourist numbers, especially in
relation to the
Boyneside
Trail and the Navan-Kingscourt Greenway.3. Contributes to local
economic growth
through increased number of visitors coming to and spending in the area.
4.
Contributes to growth in direct and indirect employment from provision,
maintenance and associated services.
5.
Meets the aspirations and commitment of the local community for
developing this
important area of public land for recreational and amenity use.
6.
Meets Kells Development Plan objectives to address the noticeable
deficit of
public open space provision in the town; for preparing an overall
development
strategy from a combined tourism and amenity perspective; and for
protecting
and enhancing landscape character and archaeological features.
7.
The rich archaeological, cultural and natural heritage of the site
offers great
potential for interpretation and as an educational resource.
8.
Supports the status of Kells as a well-established Heritage
Town
and the potential of the Commons as a Secondary Tourism Hub.
9.
Contributes significantly to the Green Infrastructure Strategy for
Kells, by
providing publicly accessible open space, habitat enhancement, and
heritage
protection and understanding.
10.
Supports statutory policy at National, County and Local levels for
creating a
strong walking and cycling culture in Ireland.

This interesting photo was taken by Dr Leo Swan RIP in the 1960's from
a helicopter. The bare hilltop emphasises the Spire with its shadow
from the west, obviously an evening shot. At that time the stones
marking the graves were still in place. Regrettably these gravemarkers
were later removed and incorporated in the graveyard wall. The circular
bronze age earthworks are clearly visible. The hill was an important
site from pre-historic times, and is mentioned in the Tain as a camping
place for Queen Maeve's army on their way to battle at Cooley. This
photo was kindly supplied by Denis McCarthy, Rockfield Road.

NRA –
At Last
Kellsonline took the
picture below of a roundabout recently cut by the NRA. It may surprise
you to
see shrubs planted on this roundabout, as before they could hardly be
seen
above the height of the grass. As we have reported previously, this
roundabout,
and more like it, did the Tidy Towns Committee and volunteers no
favours. The
judges in the Tidy Towns Competition pointed to these roundabouts and
approaches to the town as a let-down and mark-down for Kells. A pity
the NRA
did not have these areas ready in time. Is there some plan in place for
regular
maintenance by the NRA in these areas? If not surely there should be.

Public Toilets
at People's Park
The
lack of this basic facility has been pointed out by Kellsonline on an
ongoing
basis.The
provision of toilets for
visitors to the People's Park, Heritage Park, and the town of Kells in
general,has been ignored for far
too long. It is a disgrace. The thousands of visitors to this Heritage
town are
entitled to expect this basic facility. We note that Cllr. B. Collins
brought
this up at a Council Meeting some months ago
but, as usual, no further action has been taken, or at least any action
that
has been made public.

Update
on North Meath pot holes
Great
to see people will be able to go for a walk soon. When
can we do it on some of Our Roads?e.g
.outside contractors
other than Meath Co. Co. have repaired various roads over the summer.
Unfortunately large potholes adjacent to this work were not attended to
leaving it impossible to walk or drive through.

We hear you North Meath Roads
Action Group. Ronnie has taken these pictures recently of your plight.
Why some
potholes have been filled, while others, even those in between, have
been left
undone, is amazing! I can remember those same roads in that awful
condition
years ago and it seems nothing has changed. It is a disgrace. Meath
County
Council and the NRA seem more intent on upkeeping the main roads, and
areas
that are in little need of repair, than solving your ongoing problems.
Send us
your photos and we will post on kellsonline and try to shame them into
action.
No promises but we will help if we can.
