An Examination of Wage Changes in U.S. Micropolitan Statistical Areas

Where have wages grown the most? As we prepare to celebrate Labor Day and the unofficial end of summer, Garner Economics examined wage changes in micropolitan statistical areas over the past five years (post recession).

Metropolitan and Micropolitan statistical areas are defined by the Office of Management and Budget as geographic entities used for statistical purposes based on counties and county-equivalents. Micropolitan areas are urban areas in the United States centered on an urban cluster with a population of 10,000 to 49,999. As of February 2013, there were 381 metropolitan statistical areas and 536 micropolitan statistical areas in the United States.

Micropolitan cities are significant centers of population and production, with 8.4% of the U.S. population residing in them. Examination of average weekly wage change in these micro areas across the past five years (2009-2014) provides insight into the varied economic dynamics of these areas.
