Is the Manufacturing Resurgence Here to Stay?

In this brief Garner Economics president Jay Garner examines recent trends in manufacturing employment among 333 of the nation's 372 metro areas.

Between 1979 and 2010 the U.S. economy shed about eight million manufacturing jobs, decreasing from its peak of 19.4 million jobs to just 11.5 million jobs. Most of this decline occurred between 2000 and 2010, when the country's manufacturing employment base lost about six million jobs. By the end of the Great Recession, most observers believed that the future of the American manufacturing economy was dim and that the recovery would have to be focused on other industry sectors.

In spite of this gloomy outlook, the U.S. actually added about 600,000 manufacturing jobs over the four year period between April 2010 and April 2014.The news has been largely positive for the nation's Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) as well: among the 333 MSAs with available data, the manufacturing sector added 428,000 jobs during the same four-year period, representing 70 percent of the total national increase in manufacturing employment.
