To Win in the Economic Development Arena, It's All About Leadership!
|
By Jay Garner
| Jay Garner |
President and Founder,
Garner Economics, LLC
Pardon my rant, but having served in the economic development profession for a little over 33 years, I have seen just about everything as it relates to what defines the winners and losers in achieving economic development success, and it's one common denominator...the quality of the public and private leadership representing the locality where the investment is to occur or be retained. Good leadership allows for the tools and the means to achieve the end result, which is economic growth and wealth building for the citizens of the locality.
Joy Wilkins, CEcD, is with the University of Georgia and a member of the IEDC board of directors. She recently wrote an article for the IEDC publication Economic Development Now titled: Leadership in Economic Development: Character Matters. I was so impressed with the article and her message that I wanted to share it (with permission from IEDC) with our readers. It's something we can all learn from and use if you are a change agent for your community or organization. Click here to read Joy's article.

By Tom Tveidt
| Tom Tveidt |
Research Economist, Garner Economics
Currently 80 percent of all U.S. metros have greater average employment in the first quarter of 2013 than in the first quarter of 2012. In fact over the last two years about 78 percent of all 372 U.S. metros have been adding employment. But the question remains, since the recession ended officially as of June 2009, and most metros have been adding jobs for at least the last two years; are we back to previous employment levels reached four years earlier?
