The fact that OSHA includes a list of truck related topics and workplace related topics within its forklift operator training standard means only one thing, it must be done. The requirement for "evaluation of the operator's performance in the workplace" within the standard makes it clear that general training and/or off-site evaluation is simply not good enough, and quite right.

In reality, most employers are completely absorbed in the day to day of their core business unaware of these requirements much less compliant with them. This leaves condition leaves the door wide open for less than scrupulous training providers to swoop in and take money in exchange for training that does not meet the minimum standard.

Safety Management - Documentation
By Bob Lapidus, CSP, CSMS

There are three priorities when buying a house: Location, Location, Location.

There are also three priorities in the field of safety: Documentation, Documentation, Documentation.

In today's world the safety management specialist must document everything to be able to display that specific activities and actions have been taken. As the old saying goes, if it is not documented, it has not been done.

In a court of law, both the plaintiff and defense must be able to show (display) that certain things have been completed. The same holds true for Cal-OSHA inspectors. When they walk through the door, they will ask to see the records pertaining to whatever they are investigating or inspecting. Information may be stored on computers, but the hard copy must be able to be generated and provided to investigators and inspectors.

IvesQ: What does the Rough Terrain Forklift hand signal 'Dog Everything' mean?

A: The "Dog Everything" hand signal means to stop and hold. It's an old term that comes from the days when winch operators would flip a "dog" (a small latch) into a gear or sprocket mechanism to hold it in place, like people still do with the winch on a boat trailer. The days of using them on industrial machinery are long gone but the term, and the hand signal still remains.
Happy training.
