Welcome, Joel!

The ceiling on the building's exit route is seven feet eight inches high.  An advertising sign hangs from the ceiling and extends so that the bottom of the sign is six feet six inches from the floor.  Is this arrangement acceptable to OSHA?

Consider these three response options:

A. Yes, this is acceptable

B.  No, the bottom of the projection (sign) must be at least seven feet from the floor

C.  No, the bottom of the projection (sign) must be at least six feet eight inches from the floor

Loss Causes:  Not providing an adequate number of employees to do the job, task or activity

By Bob Lapidus, CSP, CSMS

Not providing an adequate number of employees to do the job, task or activity has been a loss cause forever, but it has become very real in this day and age where organizations have seen dramatic reductions in their workforce due to a challenging economy.

Deciding to continue to do the same amount and kind of work with an inadequate number of employees can lead to disastrous consequences, especially when the work includes high-risk operations.

For example, entering a permit-required confined space requires a minimum of three employees; an entrant, an attendant and a supervisor.  What happens when the number of employees drops below the required three? Read more...

Disaster Preparedness

Is Your Company Ready for a Super-Storm?

By Jerry Bach, CSHM

Vice President, Workplace Safety

Safety Center Incorporated

Although several days of advanced notice had preceded the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, there are many times we don't know when a disaster will occur. Often, there is little or no warning.

As stated by FEMA, it could take 72 hours or more to get help from emergency services in the event of a major disaster.

Those first 72 hours after a disaster strikes are the most critical. You need to be prepared for all contingencies during this period. This means you have to survive three or more days with the resources around you. The more survivors there are, the more supplies would be required, such as water, food, medical supplies, blankets, and so on. If the building where these supplies are stored has major damage and is not safe to enter, then what? Read more...

Safety Trivia
The first Atlantic storm to carry a man's name was Hurricane Bob (1979). Before that, they were all named after women.
Ask BobAskBob
Question:
I'm a new trainer and I can't recall how I'm supposed to assign operator numbers to my trainees. Please help!

Answer:
We recommend you assign your operators using your trainer number followed by a dash and then 001. For example, if your trainer number is 17000 and you have just trained your first operator, you will assign number 17000-001. Your second operator would be 17000-002, and so on.

Thanks, Bob.
