Why We Tithe

Every month when we cut our tithe check, I am reminded why we tithe. Every November I am reminded how thankful and blessed we are here in Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson and Mooresville, to be able to have such a global impact. The tithe program was created to give affiliates a way to impact Habitat´s global ministry in addition to impacting the need in our local communities. Tithing gives affiliates an opportunity to share our resources with developing countries throughout the world, and to have both a global and a local homebuilding program.

As an ecumenical Christian Housing Ministry, we tithe 10% of the funds we raise locally in order to serve families with housing solutions in another country. Our Towns Habitat chose Habitat Guatemala as the primary beneficiary of our tithe in order to help eliminate poverty housing worldwide.

Here are what some of the families we served in Guatemala have said after our trips to follow our tithe:

Huehuetenango, Guatemala - Edgar and Rosa Marina Tomas de Rivas Family (daughters Jenifer and Katherine)

Rosa said: "We couldn't believe how hard the group worked for a family they didn't even know. Everyone adapted to one another. They shared their culture with us, and we loved that. Thank you so much for the group that helped us, especially Katherine and Annette."

Edgar said: " I was embarrassed of the way we were living before. I felt like a burden to Rosa's family, where we were staying. I am so grateful to Habitat and the people that helped us. We were very sad when the group left because we loved being with them. We were amazed at what great work they did here. Thank you."

Solola, Guatemala - The Oscar Armando Camposeco de Leon Family (nephew Henry and son Oscar, Jr.)

Oscar said: "We are so grateful to the volunteers that gave their time and energy to a family they didn't know. Things like that don't commonly happen here. We feel blessed to have known them. God bless each of them and their families. They have given us the gift of a new home with an affordable mortgage that will provide a better life for my son and future children. We have our own home now, and we can do as we like here. That's a great feeling. Thank you so much for this opportunity."

Solola, Guatemala - The Maria Petronila Buch Tu family (Maria is a widow who lives with her seven children, Angelica, Denis, Yeison, Marcos, Maria, Javier and Delmy.)

Maria said: "My children and I will always remember the volunteers with love. We are grateful to them because they worked so hard for us. We have had a very difficult time since my husband died, and Habitat has made life easier and better for us. My family feels safer in our new home. Our home is cleaner, dryer, and more comfortable. My children are healthier because of the better conditions. Thank you to everyone who helped us; may God watch over you all in all what you do."

The stories are plentiful about how Habitat has changed families' lives through our tithe. As of this writing, Our Towns Habitat has served 1939 families in Guatemala with housing solutions such as new homes, smokeless stoves, water filters and latrines. We were able to serve an additional 15 families in Sri Lanka with funds entirely raised by our board of directors in 2005, which was above our normal 10% tithe. (That was, indeed, a very special year, as our board took it upon themselves to raise the funds to serve as many families in Sri Lanka as we served locally that year, while not reducing our tithe to Guatemala. That year we served 15 families locally (most ever, up to then), 15 families in Sri Lanka, and another 45 families in Guatemala.) AND, we have also served 230 families in need of housing solutions locally to date.

All have tremendous stories about where they came from, and how Habitat has changed their lives. But that's not all.  As all of these families were served by thousands of volunteers, sponsors, donors, and staff,  I'm willing to bet that has transformed every one of these lives as well.

I could not possibly imagine where Our Towns Habitat would be without our tithing. Habitat is a global ministry.  With Our Towns Habitat's leadership in tithe, we rank 8th out of 1600+ affiliates around the world in lifetime tithe. It was set forth by our very first board of directors in 1988, reaffirmed by our board in 1997, and continues today with our board making tithing part of our monthly commitments.

Thank God for our community of four towns - Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson and Mooresville, as we are continually blessed to be serving those in need of safe, decent and affordable housing solutions here, and there is MUCH more to do here! Let's not forget our needs here, remembering the needs in this world of ours, as well.

We deeply appreciate your continued support in reaching more families with housing solutions.

AmeriCorps 2012

AmeriCorps Construction Crew

by Jenny Lee

After two months of serving as an Americorps Member with Our Towns Habitat, I feel that I can honestly say that it is a crazy life! However, as crazy as it may be, I am loving it!

It has been a pleasure to work with the staff (construction, office, and ReStore) and each day holds new opportunities to have a new experience. Though most of my days are spent on construction sites, I recently had the opportunity to participate in some classroom learning. The four OTHFH AmeriCorps, along with all of the other Americorps Members serving at Habitat for Humanity affiliates, came together in Talladega, Alabama for a week of training. Honestly, I went into the week wondering if it would be worth my time but all of us walked away feeling that it was time well spent.

In addition to being the first Our Towns Americorps Members to show off our "mad skills" in the talent show, we each were able to attend workshops about areas of service that we are interested in. One of the workshops I attended was about getting youth engaged in Habitat. We discussed several ways that young people can be involved even though they must be at least 16 years old to work on a construction site. Considering that one of our houses is being co-sponsored by three local middle schools, I thought it was pretty exciting to hear about how these students could get more involved and learn more about Habitat. I am looking forward to seeing these youth grow up and become members of the community who are active in helping to give each other a hand up.
