Understanding the World's Greatest Structures
Tuesdays, July 19 - August 30 (skip July 26)
1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Peoria NEXT Innovation Center

What makes a structure - a building, bridge, or tower - great?  Its age, size, beauty, or all three?  In this group, participants will study the principles of form, function, and structure - the "why"; and the mathematical and mechanical principles - the "how" - of construction.  After all, the only thing more awe-inspiring than seeing a great structure is understanding the complex and beautiful principles behind its construction.

We'll discuss structures spanning from 27th century BC to 2012 AD, including Egypt's pyramids, the Parthenon, the White House, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Burj Khalifa skyscraper.  Participants will need to access a computer to view the videos (provided on a USB flash drive).

$45 - facilitated by Bob Yonker, OLLI Treasurer and study group committee member.

To register online, please click here; or call Bonnie at 309-677-3900.

Smithsonian Exhibition at Peoria Public Library

The Peoria Public Library announces the opening of a new exhibition, Exploring Human Origins: What Does It Mean to Be Human?  Opening on Friday, June 17, the exhibition provides a fascinating glimpse into the complex field of human evolution research.

Based on the popular exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, the exhibition explores the process of scientific investigation by communicating not only what we know about human origins, but also how we know it.

The Peoria Public Library was chosen as one of 19 sites nationwide to hos Exploring Human Origins: What Does It Mean to Be Human?  The exhibition was organized by the Smithsonian's Natural Museum of History in collaboration with the American LIbrary Association's Public Programs Office.  This project was made possible through the support of a grant from the John Templeton Foundation and support from the Peter Buck Human Origins Fund.
