If you enjoy touring historical buildings and watching lighthearted musicals, then this trip is for you! We need a few more registrations to ensure that this trip will happen, so please register as soon as possible if you are interested.
The Paramount Theatre in Aurora: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Monday, August 15
8:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
On this day-long trip to Aurora, we will dine at the historic Two Brothers Roundhouse, the oldest roundhouse in North America. In the mid-1990s, Chicago Bears football star Walter Payton renovated the building, and it is now home to Two Brothers Brewing Company.
After lunch, we will head downtown to tour the Paramount Theatre, opened in 1931 and designed withe precise acoustics and sight lines to ensure there isn't a bad seat in the house. Following our backstage tour, we will view the 1954 comedic musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, which follows the playful story of a backwoodsman who brings his new wife back to his Oregon cabin, where she is surprised to find his six brothers who want to get married, too. Nominated for Best Picture of 1954, it is known for its outstanding dance sequences. At the film's conclusion, our discussion will be moderated by Tom Scanlon, Head of Audio for the Broadway Series at the theatre.
$99 - includes tour, film screening, moderated discussion, lunch, gratuities, and round-trip charter coach transportation

Study Great Structures This Summer
Understanding the World's Greatest Structures
Tuesdays, July 19 - August 30 (skip July 26)
1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Peoria NEXT Innovation Center
What makes a structure - a building, bridge, or tower - great? Its age, size, beauty, or all three? In this group, participants will study the principles of form, function, and structure - the "why"; and the mathematical and mechanical principles - the "how" - of construction. After all, the only thing more awe-inspiring than seeing a great structure is understanding the complex and beautiful principles behind its construction.
We'll discuss structures spanning from 27th century BC to 2012 AD, including Egypt's pyramids, the Parthenon, the White House, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Burj Khalifa skyscraper. Participants will need to access a computer to view the videos (provided on a USB flash drive).
$45 - facilitated by Bob Yonker, OLLI Treasurer and study group committee member.

Lincoln Park Conservatory & Chicago Nature Museum
Chicago Nature Center with Rhonda Ferree (Activity Level 3)
Thursday, June 30
7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
On this trip, OLLI will head to Chicago with our very own nature expert, Rhonda Ferree, a University of Illinois Extension Educator, horticulture specialist, and frequent OLLI class instructor, who will share her insights and act as our personal guide throughout the day.
First, we'll visit the Lincoln Park Conservatory, built in the late 1890s and designed to showcase exotic plants and grow the thousands of plants needed for use in the park. After lunch we'll tour the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, opened in 1999 by the historic Chicago Academy of Sciences. A museum naturalist will guide us through two of the Museum's exhibits, where we will discover the history behind the founding of Chicago's oldest museum and learn about the great scientists and naturalists that paved the way. We'll also have time to browse many exhibits on our own, including the Judy Istock Butterfly Haven, the internationally renowned signature greenhouse that houses more than 1,000 butterflies.
$115 - includes museum admissions, presentations, lunch, gratuities, snacks, and charter coach transportation
