Dig in to the Life and Works Poet Laureates

Five U.S. Poet Laureates and One Scottish Bard (Discussion-Based Study Group)
Thursdays, October 1 - November 5
1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Peoria NEXT Innovation Center

Since 1937, the Librarian of the U.S. Congress has annually chosen a distinguished American poet to serve as the official Poet Laureate of our nation. During his or her term, the Poet Laureate seeks to raise our national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry.

In this study group, a different facilitator each week will talk about the life and works of five U.S. Poet Laureates and one Scottish Bard (Poet Laureate). The six facilitators are Ed Douglas (Howard Nemerov), Peggy Carter (Maxine Kumin), George Tanner (Ted Kooser), Jane Hense (Mona Van Duryn), Brooks McDaniel (William Carlos Williams) and Scotland native, Catriona Ritenhouse (Robert Bruns, the Bard of Scotland).

$45 - coordinated by Vick Steward, OLLI Study Group facilitator and member of the OLLI Study Group Committee; facilitated by volunteers as listed above

Reader's Report

One of our wonderful OLLI volunteers, Greg Peine, has been keeping a running list of books that other OLLI members have suggested as being of interest to other members.

In this new weekly article, we will spotlight one of these book suggestions in hopes that you will discover new, interesting titles.  This week the featured book is  Boys in the Boat
by Daniel Brown.

This is the story about the American Olympic crew team's triumph against all odds in Nazi Germany in 1936.

Daniel James Brown tells the passionate and heartwarming story of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers who never expected to beat the great teams of the East Coast, and yet they go on to shock the world.

This story revolves around Joe Rantz, a teenager without a family, who rows to regain his self respect and a place in the world!

I hope you read this book and enjoy it as much as I did!

-- submission by Shari Dearing

If you have a book to add to the list, send your suggestion via email to Greg Peine at gspeine@comcast.net.
