THANK YOU to the Ensign-Taylor-Lewnes Family who "adopted" Make Way For Books as the recipient of their holiday giving project last December.
|
Each year the Ensign-Taylor-Lewnes combine their charitable resources as a family to jointly support a local cause. Family member, Tara King-Taylor, a MWFB Board member and mother of 16 month-old Noah, is acutely aware of the importance of early childhood literacy and encouraged her family to choose Make Way for Books as their project. Thank you again to Tara and to her entire family for their wonderful support - and also thanks to Hammel, Beale and Lauer, P.C.C., where Tara is a CPA, for making it possible for Tara to serve on the Board of MWFB!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Please read about all the many recent things for which Make Way for Books is truly thankful. March 20, 2013 marks our 15th anniversary. In looking back over the years I am so grateful for all the wonderful individuals who have joined with me in making our organization what it is today. As we head into the next 15 years, I hope we can count on your continued support and belief in our mission to foster and support the success of children in our community through cultivating the love of books and reading.
Sincerely,

THIRD-graders Raise $998 in a Read-A-Thon for MWFB
"Can you imagine your life without bo oks?" asked MWFB Assistant Director Jenny Volpe. The third graders at Ventana Vista Elementary School began to shake their heads No! vigorously back and forth. They couldn't conceive of not having the chance to read books. Hands shot up to express their opinions about why books have been such an important part of their lives. In fact, the students were able to recount their favorite stories from the time they were toddlers, rattling off books such as No David! and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus that are still hits today with the young children that MWFB serves. According to one of the third-graders, "When my dad read to me before bed each night, that was my favorite time when I was little."
The students at Ventana Vista decided to have a Read-A-Thon and chose to donate the proceeds to Make Way for Books so that all young children have access to great books. These children have been joyfully interacting with books since they were very young and wanted to share that gift with those who are less fortunate. In light of the new Move On When Reading law that will take effect in the 2013-14 school year, it is especially poignant that these third graders are choosing to read to help young children. Starting in the 2013-14 school year, third graders who are not reading at grade level will be retained. There is a reading crisis in our community and across the state as 22,000 third graders are at risk of being held back.
Here at Make Way for Books we know that it is by starting early that a real difference can be made--research shows that providing quality early literacy opportunities helps set children up for success so that they will be ready to learn to read when they arrive at kindergarten. Through the reading efforts and generous donations made by the sponsors of these third graders more children will be given the opportunity to develop the reading readiness skills they need to succeed, and therefore, will be less likely to be retained when they get to third grade.
MIDDLE-Schoolers at Mansfeld Donate Hundreds of Books!
Reanna Cady, student council member at Mansfeld Middle School, was deeply apologetic--explaining that she and her fellow students were having trouble figuring out how to get the eleven boxes! of books delivered to Make Way for Books. Family Literacy Coordinator Natalia Phillips-Portillo and Assistant Director Jenny Volpe pulled up to Mansfeld and were greeted by more than 630 books and seven smiling members of the student council. Thank you Mansfeld for your hard work in collecting fantastic books for the children we serve!

Ashley and her friends collected 120 books at her birthday party and decorated book plates for each book. Thank you Ashley and friends!

Salpointe student Ashley Bruch asked her friends for a special birthday request. In lieu of presents to celebrate her sixteenth birthday, Ashley requested that her friends donate books. An avid reader, Ashley simply could not imagine a life without books. Ashley and her mom found Make Way for Books because this thoughtful teen decided that she wanted to use her birthday as an occasion to give books to children who don't have books at home. Now, this generous teen has started a trend among her friends who have also used their birthdays to support other local charities. Caring and conscientious teens like Ashley give us hope for a better future.

Spreading the Word: A Community Who Cares

Make Way for Books is grateful not only for the thoughtful kids helping other kids, but also for the creative ways that members of the community have helped to spread the word and support Make Way for Books as well.
This holiday season Make Way for Books

Kirt Ijams and Nancy Montoya of NonProfit News Source at the Yellow Bus
|
benefited from Stuff the Yellow Bus--a neighborhood holiday drop-off site where people could bring books, clothes, food, and toys for children and families in need. The month-long event was run by Kirt Ijams and Nancy Montoya of NonProfit News Source--a dynamic husband and wife team with a long history of facilitating connections and giving back to the community. Make Way for Books received nearly 600 books as a result of the generous children and adults who dropped off new and gently used books!
In addition, MWFB gained new support as more people in the community learned about the work we do. Members of the AZ Army National Guard saw the giant yellow bus and were very interested in Make Way for Books. The officers took up a collection from members of their unit as well as from Singapore helicopter pilots who train here each winter. The officers collected $1866, allowing MWFB to purchase 260 new hardcover books! Some of the officers came to Make Way for Books and dropped off their generous donation and read to children.

From book clubs to bridge clubs, community groups are supporting Make Way for Books. Thank you to Tucson Charity Bridge Club for donating $590 to provide books for children in under-served child-care centers. Members of the club get together to play bridge and donate the proceeds to local charities. Thank you to the Bella Novellas Book Club--during the holidays this wonderful group of book lovers donated picture books for the children MWFB serves. Make Way for Books is inspired by those of you who have so thoughtfully and creatively helped more children gain access to great books!

Make Way for Books could not continue to make a difference in the community. This year we had an anonymous donor willing to match donations in our holiday campaign, which resulted in $28,401raised from Thanksgiving through the end of the 2012 year. THANK YOU to all of you who contributed and to those who contribute in so many ways all year long!
