Engaging Girls in STEM
Pictured above, Mary Ann Hoffman,  program facilitator, engages a group of Lake Shore Middle School students in designing their own healthy city, each assuming the role of a different type of engineer in an effort to address environmental issues.
As young women gravitate away from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers toward other professions, and employment in STEM fields increases at a faster pace than in non-STEM fields, the U.S. must increase proficiency and interest in these areas to compete in the global economy. With  a generous two-year grant from Quantum Foundation, GSSEF is delivering the Engaging Girls in STEM program at five Title I middle schools in Palm Beach County, serving 400 girls during the two-year funding period. Based on a proven model developed by GSUSA, Engaging Girls in STEM uses fun, hands-on, experiential learning activities to foster team-building skills, promote self-confidence, and ignite interest in STEM-related academic courses and careers.
