|I Heard it Through the Green Grapevine!
This recurring feature in E-News will help dispel the myths and rumors we often hear through the Girl Scout "Green Grapevine." Most of the answers can be found in our Volunteer Essentials documents
in the Volunteer Vault
. As always, if you need an answer to any question, you can always email firstname.lastname@example.org
and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Dear Green Grapevine-
This may be a silly question, but, can men be Girl Scouts?
Will E. Belong
There are no silly questions! And the answer is yes, men can even be leaders and troop volunteers!
Girl Scout membership is granted to any person, age 18 or older, who accepts the organization's principles and beliefs as stated in the Preamble of the Constitution of Girl Scouts of the USA; and has paid the annual membership dues. Beyond that, men can also serve in leadership roles. Like any other volunteer they will need to submit a volunteer application and successfully pass our background check. Male adult members may serve in a troop/group; which includes being designated as the Leader with a minimum of one unrelated female adult member who serves the same troop/group as Co-Leader.
Male leaders are required to have an unrelated female co-leader and may need to rely on additional female volunteers in the Troop in order to ensure they meet the girl/adult ratios for meetings, traveling and camping. Details on how many females are needed for these activities can be found in the Volunteer Essentials Manual and our Volunteer Policies and Procedures.
There are occasionally some events where men are not allowed. These are usually ones where separate sleeping quarters cannot be provided (like Mall Madness) and this information is included on the event's promotional materials.
We also have events designed exclusively for men to participate with their daughters. Our Dude, That's My Dad summer camp session was wildly popular and many Service Units hold daddy-daughter events.
