Homecoming Week A Success
"What a success homecoming was this year!" Student Council President Mariah Ferraco said in reviewing the various events in which students participated during the week of October 8th.

Celebrating Throwback Thursday
The week leading up to homecoming night was full of great anticipation and excitement. There was a great turnout of students who showed their school spirit and dressed up to participate in spirit week.

Fundraisers were held throughout the week and proceeds were donated to breast cancer awareness and the Boys' and Girls' Club of America.

On Friday, the entire school was brought in to the gym to

enjoy and participate in a pep rally. Fall sports were announced, and an obstacle course was run. "The entire student body had such a great time," Mariah said, adding, "It was a great feeling to see everyone excited and enthusiastic about their school."

Before the homecoming football game, the community and students were welcome to come and enjoy a pig roast that was set up by the baseball fields. This turned out to have a great turnout as well.

Following the pig roast was the homecoming football game. The tribe and fans in the stands cheered on our beloved football team and watched while Penn Hills earned a victory against Plum.

Finally, Saturday was the big day and the culminating event of the week.  The Homecoming Dance turned out to be a success. Students came together to enjoy a night that took them back in time to the era of the Great Gatsby.

Homecoming King Ryan Bunyaratapan and Queen Amanda DeVito
"I do not know if there is anything I would have done differently or changed," Mariah said.  "In life," she explained, "there is always something that could have been done better but, if you work hard and preform a task to the best of your ability, then that is all you can ask for."  She said that she, along with her other student representatives, worked hard to create a night that students would remember for years to come.  She said she was also thankful for the amount of students who volunteered their time to help create an enjoyable night.  (for more photos from Homecoming Week and the dance, visit the Senior High Photo Gallery)
Board Member Brings Back Info From Conference

In October, the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators-Pennsylvania School Board Association (PASA-PSBA) held their 2013 Annual Fall Leadership Conference in Hershey.

Featured speakers at the event included Mike Eruzione, member of the 1980 Olympic gold medal winning U.S. Hockey Team; Pedro Noguera, professor, author, and Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education; Captain Richard Phillips, captain of a U.S. ship captured by Somali pirates; and Kaitlin Roig, First Grade Teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

School Board Member Jennifer Burgess-Johnson attended the conference and reported back to the Board on some of the highlights.

Keynote Speakers - Dr. Pedro Noguera, Captain Phillips, and Kaitlyn Roig were outstanding and all communicated a common theme of preparedness, recognition of any issue great or small, leadership, and excellence and equality in education, Mrs. Burgess-Johnson said.  She added that she personally met Dr. Noguera and was interested in finding a way to have him speak in the District.

Educational Sessions - Mrs. Burgess-Johnson said the sessions were truly informative and one in particular (Accountability and Getting Better Through an Organization Wide Evaluation Process presented by our AUI's Dr. Linda Hippert and Shauna D'Allesandro) was fantastic.  Setting goals and receiving feedback are critical to assessing our organization's strengths and weaknesses on a continuous basis, she explained.

Vendors/Fair - Of all the vendors, there was one Mrs. Burgess-Johnson found who could possibly assist the District the most at this time (Safe School Helpline, www.schoolhelpline.com).  This vendor offers 24/7 support services and early warning notifications of fights, drugs, and threats through an avenue for students, teachers, and/or parents to anonymously report what they know.

In another area of interest, Mrs. Burgess-Johnson reported that the Downington Area School District has gone to a "seatless" classroom, opting for stability balls.  The results of the study and survey were interesting and encouraging regarding the effect the stability balls had on hyperactive students, she explained.

Cheerleaders Receive Spirit Award
At the varsity football game on October 25th vs. Woodland Hills, the Penn Hills Varsity Cheerleaders were presented with the "Comcast Spirit Award."

This is an award that involves the fans, bands, and cheerleaders, who are encouraged to show off their school spirit.

Spirit was judged based on the amount of signage, creative use of the Comcast logo, appropriate and lively cheers, use of school colors, and crowd energy.

The winner was chosen following the game and presented with a specially engraved trophy.
The winning sign
Coach Janet Ferrell said, "The squad worked very hard to demonstrate their school spirit and were thrilled to receive this award.  We are always happy to have our Penn Hills pride acknowledged."

High School Library Assistants Help Promote the New Library

When you enter the library at the Senior High, you will be greeted by a Library Assistant behind the circulation desk. These students volunteer their study hall time throughout the school day to assist students and faculty in the library with books, computers, and other technology. Since moving in to the new school last year, they have created posters, designed a display case, and run contests to help promote the library.

Angelica Walker

Recently, senior Library Assistant Angelica Walker created a new website to show people what the library has to offer.

"There's more to the library than just books," Angelica said, adding, "The library is a great place for students to read, study, or just hang out. The library is the most beautiful and peaceful part of the school and that's why I'm here three periods a day."

In addition to her work at the library, Angelica is currently taking four AP and three college classes. Next year, she will attend the University of Pittsburgh to study education.  "Our old website was created over five years ago, so I felt like we needed to step it up. This website shows off how high-tech the new library is," she explained.

The new website features pictures of the library, grade-level reading lists, links to the print and eBook catalogs, and other resources. The website can be accessed at http://phshlmc.wix.com/phsh-library. Find your spot at the library!
Create a Logo Contest Open to All Students
The Penn Hills Community Development Corporation (PHCDC) has launched a contest for its permanent logo, and they would like to spread the word to the Penn Hills community beyond that of their current membership list.  They are inviting Penn Hills students (of any age) to submit an entry and are offering a multimedia art basket and $25 gift card to the contest winner.  The winner will be announced in the spring of 2014.

Contest deadline is 11:59 pm EST on December 15, 2013.  For a complete list of rules and contest guidelines, click here.
Penn Hills Supports Autism Speaks
Autism LogoFor the fourth year in a row, the Penn Hills School District has participated in the event "Walk Now for Autism Speaks."  Money was raised in a variety of ways, including jeans days, cupcake Fridays, string bag sales, specialized days at the elementary schools, and a Facebook donation campaign.

The Penn Hills Passion Team was actively made up of Team Captain Justine Ulyas and Fundraisers/Walkers Amanda Schmidt and Kristen Postava.  The team raised a total of $3,230 for Autism Speaks.  Over the course of the past four years, the team has raised over $8,000 for the organization.

On October 24th, Autism Speaks held its "2013 Pittsburgh Chapter Awards."  Kristen Postava attended the event to represent the District.  The Penn Hills Passion Team received a plaque for its efforts.  As a secondary award, Autism Speaks donated a refurbished IPad to Linton Middle School.  The IPad will be given to Mr. Flannery for use in the Autistic Support classroom.

One in every eighty-eight children has autism.  Since its founding in 2005, Autism Speaks has become the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

Next year will mark the 15th anniversary for "Walk Now for Autism Speaks."  The Penn Hills Passion Team will be actively participating in fundraising again in 2014.  The team would like to thank everyone who helped to raise money last year and hopes for your continued support.  Anyone interested in being part of the team for 2014 can contact Kristen Postava at kposta@phsd.k12.pa.us.  For more information on Autism Speaks, visit www.autismspeaks.org.
