Alumni Spotlight: Keisha Frith

  1. How old where you when you began playing the violin? I was 9 years old, and I started to play at Robert Russa Moton Elementary School. I went there for their music magnet program which was led by Patricia Kilroy at the time.
  2. At what age did you join GMYS? I started GMYS when I was 13 years old and I joined because I met the symphony conductor at the time, David Eccles. He came to my middle school  to recruit, and I really like him, so I joined.
  3. When did you know you wanted to become a violin teacher? When I attended Coral Reef Sr. High I did volunteer work. I volunteered at GMYS and my church as well. I found that I genuinely enjoyed working with kids. I also have two younger sisters, and I really enjoyed playing with them and teaching them music as well. When I graduated from high school, I attended Miami Dade College and Florida Atlantic University. At Miami Dade College, I took a few classes with Dr. Linda Bustamante (former GMYS String Orchestra Conductor) and she asked me if I would assist her on Sundays during rehearsal, I did, and I fell in love with teaching then.
  4. What is your favorite song to play? My favorite song to play would have to be the Bartok Roumanian Folk Dances. Bela Bartok is one of my favorite composers and the piece is just a blast to play.
  5. Do you still play regularly? Yes, I play regularly in weddings, concerts, gigs, studio sessions, etc.
  6. What advice can you give GMYS students about studying music as a profession? The best advice that I could give to them would be to volunteer. You can learn so much by observing and doing. Often times when you study music in college you are reading about music, talking about how to teach music, etc. You are not physically in the presence of children, working with them and teaching them until your last semester. My biggest advice would be to get out there and observe a music class, volunteer with your local youth symphony or school and get involved. Be prepared to work hard, and remember that you learn the most by doing.

Fundraising for Ireland
February 15
Five GMYS Symphony Orchestra students performed at Pinecrest Gardens for Cognac Day on Saturday, February 15th to raise some spending money for their Ireland Tour. Our talented students blew the audience away!

February 26
On Friday, February 28th by invitation from Florida State Representative David Richardson, District 213, a trio of GMYS Dublin chamber players performed at a political fundraiser at the Miami Beach home of Jonas Meyer & Carla Probus.  The event started a bit after 6:00pm and Natalia Hidalgo, Violin, Relyn Myrthil, Violin & Viola and Andres Zambrano, Cello, played for over an hour of chamber music for the arriving guests.

After the "cocktail and hors d'oeuvres hour", the Representative then introduced and thanked the GMYS trio by name, explained a little about the Dublin trip and took two hundred dollars from his own money and placed it in a bowl, asking his friends and supporters to do the same for these teens who will soon be needing some spending money in Ireland.  Representative Richardson then spent the next 30 minutes or so, carrying around the bowl while working the crowd asking personally for donations for the kids.
