With one month left to enjoy the summer with your family, whether you are playing at the pool, enjoying cookouts with neighbors, or visiting Virginia's beautiful state parks and beaches, back-to-school shopping is probably the last thing on your mind. You may want to consider taking a break from enjoying the beautiful summer weather, because it's time once again for Virginia's annual back-to-school sales tax holiday.

This year's holiday begins today Aug. 1, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 3. Items that will be exempt from sales tax during the holiday include most articles of clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less each, and school or office supplies that cost $20 or less per item. There is no limit to the number of items you can purchase without paying the sales tax, provided each item meets the holiday restrictions.

A list of qualifying items, guidelines for the holiday, and answers to frequently asked questions are available on the Virginia Department of Taxation's website

Anyone can buy tax-exempt items during the holiday; it is not limited to purchases for students. During the tax holidays, retailers may elect to pay the sales tax themselves on any non-qualifying items that they want to offer tax-free to customers. This means you and your family will be able to find great deals on many other items as well.

Hanover celebrates National Night Out, August 5

National Night Out is an annual event designed to strengthen our communities by encouraging neighborhoods to engage in stronger relationships with one another and with their local law enforcement partners. The goal is to heighten crime-prevention awareness, build support and participation in local anti-crime programs, and most importantly, send a message that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. It's also the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbors even better.

Hanover, New Kent, and King William Sheriff's offices will be visiting neighborhoods all across the counties to strengthen lines of communication and employee the "Virginia Way" of community policing that allows our district to continue to be amongst the best places to live, work and raise a family.

I am looking forward to joining constituents in Pebble Creek from 5:45PM to 6:30PM and Traveller's Run from 7:00PM to 8:00PM for their celebrations. Additionally, I be providing and serving popsicles to attendees. Look for me at the King of Pops, all-natural, popsicle cart.  I would enjoy the opportunity to meet you.

Workforce Training for Veterans

I am excited to report a new workforce training program by Allstate for our country's honorably discharged veterans. Our veterans have sacrificed so much to protect our country, and deserve the very best when they return from duty. Allstate is launching a four week program to educate military veterans to become licensed insurance agents. Allstate is covering all costs associated with this program, and will provide participants with opportunities for employment at local Allstate locations throughout the Commonwealth.

Participants are not obligated to join the Allstate team. This session will be held from August 1 - August 29 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon completion, veterans will be well prepared to pass the Virginia state property and casualty license exams. In two previous sessions in Texas and Illinois, 80% of participants were offered positions at Allstate.

National 811 Day: August 11

National 811 Day is observed each year on August 11. August 11 is a convenient way to remind professional excavators as well as homeowners of the importance of always calling 811 before digging.

Whether you are planning major construction, home improvement, or a small landscaping project, always dig with C.A.R.E. (Call 811 before you dig, Allow time for marking, Respect the marks, Excavate carefully). Striking underground utility lines can potentially cause environmental and property damage, costly delays, and even personal injury. Call 811 at least three business days before you start your project, tell the operator where you are planning to dig and what type of work you will be doing.

Affected local utilities companies will be notified to mark the approximate location of public underground lines, pipes, and cables, so you'll know what's below - and be able to dig safely.
