Virginia's Back-to-School Sales Tax Returns August 2-4

~Many Clothing Items and School Supplies Will be Tax-Free~

It's the end of July, and you've still got whole month left to play in the pool, grill outdoors, and visit Virginia's beautiful state parks with your kids.  Back-to-school shopping might be the last thing on you mind at the moment.  You may want to slip your flip-flops back on and hit the stores, however, because it's the time once again for Virginia's annual back-to-school sales tax holiday.

MATER FEST
Henry and Dad at the Tomato Festival

This year's holiday begins on Friday, Aug. 2, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 4.  Items that will be exempt from sales tax during the holiday include most articles of clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less each, and school or office supplies that cost $20 or less per item.  There is no limit to the number of items you can purchase without paying he sales tax, provided each item meets the holiday restrictions.

A list of qualifying items, guidelines for the holiday, and answers to frequently asked questions are available on the Virginia Department of Taxation's website at www.tax.virginia.gov.  Anyone can buy tax-exempt items during the holiday; it is not limited to purchases for students.  During the tax holidays, retailers may elect o pay the sales tax themselves on any non-qualifying items that they want to offer tax-free to customers.  This means great deals can likely be found on many other items as well.

Delegate Chris Peace was honored to speak at the award ceremony for the Old Church Community Center Otters Swim Team.  Supporting community organizations that build strong character and develops a strong sense of community is important to Delegate Peace. Community athletic programs promote the development of young people by instilling a sense of belonging, usefulness, and a sense of competence.  Through these, self esteem is enhanced and an environment is created which helps youth to reach their full potential.

Speaking at the launch, Susan Allen said, "Mark Obenshain has the right vision and experience to lead the Attorney General's office.  Virginians know that with Mark, we have someone who will focus on the job and he will work with our public safety officials to keep our communities safe.  In the Virginia Senate, Mark sponsored legislation that passed on a broad, bipartisan basis to require Va colleges to establish early warning and notification systems.  As a mother of 3 children, including 2 graduates of Virginia colleges, that's the kind of focus I want to see in our next Attorney General."

Sarah Brooks, President of P.D. Brooks Traffic Control, said, "As a business owner, I want to see someone in the Attorney General's Office who will make it easier for me to expand and create more jobs.  Mark Obenshain has run a business, knows what it takes to make payroll, and he's been a champion for making Virginia a better place to get a job in the General Assembly.  Female entrepreneurs and those they employ will have an ally in the Attorney General's office in Mark Obenshain.

State Board of Elections Launches Online Voter Registration
The State Board of Elections (SBE), in partnership with the the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), launched an online voter registration as a result of recently enacted legislation.  Eligible citizens of the Commonwealth will now be able to submit a voter registration application or update their registration information online.
The URL for this site is: https://www.vote.virginia.gov/

In order to complete the application process online, citizens must provide their Virginia DMV customer identification number, which is displayed on DMV issued identification cards or Driver's Licenses.  survey Citizens who do not have a Virginia DMV customer identifier may still fill out the registration application online, but will be required to print and return the completed application to the appropriate local voter registration office.

All voter registration application submissions are subject to review and approval by the appropriate local general registrar.  Citizens will be notified directly via mail by the local voter registration office once an application has been processed.  Voters will also be mailed a new or updated voter registration card once the appropriate general registrar accepts the application or update.

SBE encourages all eligible citizens to participate in this new method of applying to register to vote or update voter registration information.  Additional information is available at SBE's website: www.SBE.Virginia.gov.
