Message from Chris

In these times, where bad news is too often an occurrence, I am happy to share some good news with you. During my service as your Delegate, I have worked with my colleagues in the General Assembly to grow Virginia's economy and to enact legislation that will create jobs and opportunities for residents of Virginia and those that are soon to graduate in the coming weeks.

In this month's Peace Progress, I'd like to share some good news regarding Virginia's shrinking unemployment rate, our work to expand the economy, and efforts to promote small businesses across the Commonwealth.

Lowest Unemployment Rate Since December '08

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics recently announced that Virginia's unemployment rate fell from 5.6 percent to 5.3 percent in March - the lowest rate since December 2008. Virginia has the lowest unemployment rate in the Southeast, and the second lowest East of the Mississippi.

Virginia's unemployment rate is now over a full point lower than any of our neighboring states. This good news demonstrates that the General Assembly and Governor McDonnell's conservative principles are helping foster job growth and opportunity here in the Commonwealth.  While we are pleased with this superb progress, we will have to keep working hard to build our economy as we face the uncertain challenges from sequestration and the Obama Administration's focus on military base closures and reduced defense spending.

Governor McDonnell to Host Small Business Summit

Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that he will host the Governor's Small Business Summit in Richmond Wednesday, June 5, 2013.  The Summit is co-hosted by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and will be held during 'Business Appreciation' week in Virginia. The summit will bring together small businesses to discuss challenges and opportunities for small business owners in the Commonwealth. The summit is part of Governor McDonnell's commitment to ensure Virginia is the best place to own and operate a small business in the nation.

"In October of 2011, Governor McDonnell hosted a Small Business Summit in Richmond featuring panels on procurement, technology, key issues, and funding," said Nicole Riley, Virginia state director of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). "The results were very positive, and NFIB is pleased to partner with Governor McDonnell to host a second summit. With significant headwinds still hampering economic growth nationwide, Virginia must remain focused on addressing issues that matter to small businesses."
