 Red Shirt Head SHot

Another trip to Costco, and Peter has come home with a double-pack of raisins. That's two one-pound bags of raisins! Given that I don't eat raisins and that Peter has barely made a dent in the first bag, I decide that the unopened bag will go to a food bank.

The theme of this newsletter is "Get your kitchen organized before the holidays!" And because so many are less fortunate then us, now is a great time to go through your pantry and find all those still good and unopened purchases that you thought you would use: extra boxes of rice or pasta, granola/breakfast bars, oatmeal, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, canned vegetables/fruits, tuna, canned soup, etc. For a list of local food pantries, visit TECares.org or Google "food bank + your zip code".

Amidst an overabundance of stuff, appointments, and "shoulds", it's easy to forget how lucky I am. It's actually a great time to slow down and appreciate the people in my life (my non-raisin-eating husband for one), and the simple pleasures each day brings.

Thank you all for being part of my mission to help people live a more streamlined life. Happy Thanksgiving!

Fridge Makeover!

Pretty soon you'll have plenty of leftovers to store in your fridge. Make room now with these helpful tips:

  1. Keep eggs stored in their original cartons. The opaque cartons will keep eggs fresher longer. And keep them in the colder part of the fridge, not the door.

  2. Use sealable glass containers instead of plastic for leftovers. I'm

encouraging clients to use glass for three Pyrex glass containers reasons: there's too much plastic in our landfills - can we reverse the trend? They are perfectly clear and easy to see through. And although there is a debate about particle breakdown and health hazards, why not trust a material that's been around forever? Make sure you buy microwave and dishwasher safe glassware. This Pyrex set sold at Target can even be used in the oven.

  3. Use rectangular leftover containers (like the Pyrex set pictured) instead of round for maximum space efficiency.

  4. Lazy Susans: Would one work in your fridge? (See below.)

  5. And of course, regularly throw out old containers of salad dressings and condiments.

Just a few of my favorites...

A. I love this under shelf organizer for where you have a fixed shelf - its great for loose items like packages.

B. I use these Lazy Susans everywhere I can. It saves the time we spend pulling things out of cabinets and shelves when searching for something

C. Any cabinet or door for that matter is a great opportunity for some kind of storage. This works well for spices because there will only be one layer and you can easily locate the spice you are looking for.

D. These OXO containers are great for anything that normally comes in a floppy bag.

E. This is a great step stool for shorties like me. It is 1" wide when folded so that it fits pretty much anywhere.

Client Story:
Temporary Kitchen Setup

I mentioned in an earlier edition about my client who asked me to set up a temporary kitchen while her kitchen was being remodeled. Here are photos of the kitchen I set up:

This was a workroom off of the client's garage. We moved in what they would need to use during the kitchen renovation and packed everything else. The surface on the table against the back wall was really rough so we got some printed plastic sheeting from Joanne's fabric to cover it and it became the inspiration for the space. The shelves on the right wall were added for to hold dishes. They are so handy she will use them even after we move back into the renovated kitchen. I have to say that my client LOVES the space! It is so pleasant.
