JESSIE MILLER'S ADVICE FOR PARENTING THE DIGITAL GENERATION
Social media guru, Jessie Miller, spoke to a group of curious parents on Tuesday night about the challenges of parenting children who are digital natives. Though difficult to summarize an hour long presentation in a few short paragraphs, we are sharing the highlights of his talk below: The Internet is EVERYWHERE. Even if one tries to control it or filter it, it will find your children. As well, with so many children on data plans, the best efforts of educational institutions to limit what students are exposed to are circumvented. Parents should Google their children's names, including their user names for online gaming purposes, to see what comes up. Children need to understand that they all develop online reputations and should be mindful as to how they choose to represent themselves on social media and other platforms. In due time, universities, potential employers, new relationships and even potential in-laws will search your children's names to assess the content of their character. Every time one posts, s/he is contributing to their "brand." Privacy is an idea; not a setting. Everything posted on the Internet is archived (see archive.org) and can eventually be accessed. Snapchat's "photo disappearing" promise does not mean the photos disappear from the company's servers thus students should think carefully before posting. There can also be legal ramifications to compromising and/or inappropriate posts. Students should realize that anything they post can eventually be seen by authorities, if need be. We need to accept that children are digitally-engaged and mobile connected. Parents must continually have conversations with their children both to inform them of the inherent risks and to remind them that parents have ultimate say and the power to check their devices at any time. |

PURIM MARKED BY BRIGHT, ORIGINAL COSTUMES
This year's Purim carnival, with the goal of "controlled merriment," was a rousing success. Highlights included a walk down the red carpet to show off all the creative get ups, a carnival which featured a karaoke station, a personalized button station, a fortune teller and other original fun booths, a magician who held the attention of rowdy and excited students, and a Preschool Purim Musical Jam with the popular Schwillmans--a VTT tradition! Thank you to Morah Ellen and the entire Purim planning committee for the wonderful day of fun!

PARASHAT HASHAVUA/WEEKLY TORAH PORTION
Last Thursday morning, seventh grade student Oliver Munt celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at Schara Tzedeck. Mazal tov to his parents Stephanie Glotman and Brad Munt. Oliver is a Purim baby. Read Oliver's take on this special holiday below.
For those of you who don't know, I am a Purim baby. I was born on March 18, 2003 or the 14th day of Adar in the year 5763. I was not only born on my grandparent's 47th wedding anniversary, but also on Purim. I am the total Purim package... complete with the jokes. And simply by attending this morning you too will get the full Purim package. What is the Purim package, you ask? Essentially there are four special Mitzvot or moral deeds of Purim. They are: Listening to the Megilah. The megillah is the story of Esther (not Glotman) that is printed at the end of most editions of the Hebrew Bible. You have to hear the whole thing from the beginning to end, no skipping, from a hand scribed scroll. The racket you have all been listening to the past 45 minutes from those noise makers is only a tradition, not a formal mitzvah. Some consider it torture, others just think Haman deserves it. The special Purim feast also called the Purim Se'udah. All that is required at the feast is bread and the rest is as you like it, as long as it is kosher. People are also encouraged to drink plenty of wine. Some say enough so that you don't know the difference between Mordechai and Haman. More on that story later. So let's eat drink and be merry!
