ANNUAL FIELD TRIP TO VICTORIA
|
Yes, those are fifth grade Talmud Torah students in front of the BC Legislature. As part of their social studies unit on Government, our students travel to Victoria every year (by ferry) to see elected representatives in action. They also visit the oldest synagogue in Western Canada and the Royal BC Museum. Luckily, they had sunny skies for the day long trip.
To prepare for the visit, MLA for Coquitlam Selina Robinson, came to VTT to explain the intricacies of the Legislature. The students, naturally, were most curious about question hour.

PURIM SPIRIT WEEK LAUNCHES WITH GREAT SURPRISE
Last Friday, students were called down to the gym where Mrs. Lowenstein awaited their arrival with a stern and solemn face ready to lecture the students about a topic of grave concern. Ten seconds into her talk, the curtains to the gym stage swung open whereupon Jordan Zwicker of the DJ music service, Beyond Sound, blasted popular tunes and students and staff spontaneously broke into hip and groovy dance moves. This was the formal introduction of PURIM SPIRIT WEEK and it certainly surprised everyone! Many thanks to Morah Ellen Wisenthal and her dedicated Purim committee (Ryan Gluckman, Kim Fisher, Rachel Berko-Gabay and Pat Girling) for the ingenious introduction of this most festive of weeks.

STUDENTS GET INTO THE SPIRIT FOR PURIM
Students showed creativity, ingenuity and flair for Purim Spirit Week. Responding to each day's theme request, students came to school with crazy hair; wore comfy PJs; supported their house teams in red, blue, green and yellow; donned hats, caps, tuques, sombreros, and fedoras; and showed up to school ready for the beach despite chilly weather but sunny skies. Our teachers joined them as well showing their ability to be playful and fun!

BETTER THAN IHOP???
Our first-ever all-day Purim Pancake Breakfast, held in open tents in the playground, met with resounding student approval. We are also grateful to parents Sharon Goldman, Ruth Jankelowitz and Susan Tabliga for their help with flipping and serving the flapjacks.

PARASHAT HASHAVUA/WEEKLY TORAH PORTION
Last Saturday, seventh grade student Mikal Stein celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at Temple Sholom. Mazal tov to her parents Colin and Yael Stein. Mikal's interpretation of parashat Pekudei is below.
My parsha is called Pekudei. It's from the book of Exodus, or Shemot.
In this parasha, there is a lot of detail that describes all the steps the people of Israel took to build and complete the Tabernacle, the mishkan, a portable sanctuary. The tabernacle was a spiritual center that, even in the middle of the desert, was a place where the People of Israel could atone for sins or express gratitude, usually through sacrifices.
The mishkan was also the place where God would communicate with Moses, during the time of exile from Egypt, wandering through the desert to find Israel. At the end of the first section of this parasha, Moses' brother Aaron and the priests were given special clothing. This symbolic moment marked the completion of the building of the Tabernacle.
The parsha explains how the people of Israel built the Tabernacle, and Moses blessed them when he saw their work. It had become a holy place. Moses and the people knew this because of a cloud that hovered over the Tabernacle, symbolizing that God was temporarily dwelling in it. When the cloud lifted, it was a sign for people to move on.
