yachad
At yesterday's Yachad assembly, our Grade 4 & 7 Chesed Clubs announced a BOLD initiative! They are trying to raise $10K to help the Abuyadaya Jewish community in Uganda purchase a school bus for their interfaith school (Jewish, Christian and Muslim). With a school bus, the students will eliminate their daily 10KM walk to school and will be better able to learn and thrive. If VTT raises $10K, a donor will come forward with another $10K to purchase the bus! Many students have already forfeited Hanukkah gifts and birthday presents to support this cause. Imagine if there's a school bus transporting students in Uganda, thanks to the efforts of the entire VTT community?

STEM Wraps Up for Grade 3

Third grade students had their last STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) class with facilitators from Daedalos Academy  this week. Next term, fifth grade students will be given the opportunity to explore this medium of learning.

Registration for our after school LEGO Robotics programs (on Tuesdays) is now open. Wrote one parent, "My daughter took a summer program run by Daedalos academy and we were thrilled to see the same programming offered at VTT.  She comes home "charged" and excited about the things she learned and programs they created.  She is so curious to learn more and can't wait to build the next creation - pretty impressive considering she already had a full day of learning beforehand."

heart
Experiential learning at its finest!

As part of Kindergarten's unit on learning about their parents' jobs and professions, K3 students had the opportunity to see and touch a preserved pig's and human's heart, thanks to VTT parent Dr. Jonathon Leipsic (with help from VTT parent Dr. Andrew Merkur). Donning purple latex gloves, students gently touched and prodded the organs for a hand-on biology class.

One particularly touching question from Carrie was "Does the heart pump blood when it's in love?"

Mazal Tov to Isabel Wiseman

Seventh grade student, Isabel Wiseman, celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at the Schara Tzedeck last Friday. Mazal tov to her parents, Natalie & Sam Wiseman.

Believe it or not, today is the darkest day of the year! If we lived 500 years ago we would might be going to sleep right now because it would be totally dark, and tonight it is even an 'old moon', which means the moon is just a sliver.  Being winter in Vancouver, on most nights there is so much cloud cover and rain, that we usually can't even see the moon.  All this adds up to a lot of darkness.  This is similar to life because there is a lot of darkness out there in the world.

toto
When isn't a cute dog the star of the show?

Grade 4 students saw the live theatre production of The Wizard of Oz at Richmond's Gateway Theatre on Wednesday. They are learning the play in Hebrew so this was a great way for them to connect to the material. Toto, of course, was a highlight for all!
