KOL HA'KAVOD KUDOS KORNER
VTT parent, Michelle Dodek, and her reliable group of volunteers deserve credit for the efficient PAC Hanukkah sale. As opposed to years past, the amount and quality of the goods available was just right! Todah Rabah! We would also like to thank VTT parent, Dr. Neil Pollock. As the Grade 6 students have been learning about life in developing countries this past term, Dr. Pollock came to speak with both classes about the medical work that he has done in both Rwanda and Haiti. The students learned about the challenges that these countries face with regards to poor infrastructure, civil war, government corruption, lack of funding for hospitals, and insufficient medical equipment. Dr. Pollock also spoke to the students about the most common health concerns in these two countries, which include malaria, HIV/AIDS, as well as tuberculosis. He also explained the importance of having doctors from countries like Canada volunteer to teach new surgical procedures, in an effort to reduce disease transmission. To learn more about Dr. Pollock's work in the developing world, read this National Post profile.

Message from the Head of School
Dear VTT Community,
The safety and security of our students and staff is always top of mind at Vancouver Talmud Torah. In light of the recent events in France, I wanted to reassure our community of this ongoing commitment and review all the steps we take to ensure safe and secure premises and the safety and security of our students and staff.
- VTT has two professionally-trained security guards monitoring both the front and back entrances of the school. They are linked to each other and the school staff by walkie-talkie.
- Security cameras monitor all entrances to the school.
- XPERA, a global security firm, advises VTT on best practice and audits our premises regularly to identify vulnerabilities and strengths. Our security posture, policies and procedures are reviewed frequently to stay current and relevant.
- We are in regular and ongoing contact with VTT's police liaison officer, Constable McLaughlin, and are able to access to him immediately should security issues arise.
- The Vancouver Police Department has all of VTT's floor plans on file and they are familiar with our layout in case of an emergency. Furthermore, they will be doing a practice drill in our school (on a non-instructional day) in the coming months.
- The focus of our November staff meeting was on security procedures and protocols and was facilitated by a member of the XPERA team.
- All VTT students have been educated on how to respond to an intruder drill and we successfully ran a drill last week.
- We endeavour to keep the parkade safe by insisting on no phones nor distractions when picking up children.
- Vancouver Talmud Torah receives direction and advice from Jewish Federation who assumes a lead role in advising all Jewish community agencies on threat alerts, etc.
- This summer, we will be installing a new security window at the 26th Avenue entrance as a further measure of safety for the school.
Security professionals have assured us that threats to our school remain extremely low. All adults in our building are trained to observe and report any suspicious behaviour to our security team.
We take the safety and security of our students and our community most seriously.
Parents, please continue to work in partnership with us to report any suspicious activity. If something doesn't feel right, please report it to either of the guards directly, to Debbie Broadley in the office ( dbroadley@talmudtorah.com) or to Jessica Neville at jneville@talmudtorah.com.
VTT is committed to keeping our parents and community informed and up to date on security matters of the school.
Wishing our community a peaceful Shabbat Shalom,
Cathy Lowenstein, M.Ed. Head of School

Widely known for her professional resources, Reading Power and Writing Power, Gear provided teachers with a practical framework to develop and enhance their student's writing abilities. Gear shared lessons and literature designed to inspire writing and critical thinking. Faculty members left the training session with an expanded toolkit to support the development of their students' writing skills.

Student Torah Commentary: Parashat Ha'Shavua/Weekly Torah Portion
Last Saturday, seventh grade student, Aviv David, celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at Congregation Schara Tzedeck. We wish his parents, Meirav and Yaron David, mazal tov, as well as his grandparents, Morah Ruth (VTT teacher on leave this year) and Tony David. Below is Aviv's analysis of her Torah portion, parashat Toldot. In this week's parasha we discuss the story of two brothers; Esav and Yaacov, and their parents Rivkah and Isaac.
Rivkah gives birth to two boys. The first baby comes out red-cheeked (Adom) and hairy and they name him Esav. The second son is fair skinned and gentle looking. They name him Yacov. The boys grow up alongside one another, but they grow up very differently. Esav is a hunter and a farmer and knows how to live off the land. Yacov is a calm and a thoughtful shepherd. Strangely, each parent has their favorite son. Isaac favors Esav, Rivkah favors Yacov.
One day Esav comes home from a long day in the woods feeling hungry and tired and he sees Yacov with a pot of stew. Esav asks his brother for some of his stew. Yacov jumps on the opportunity to help his brother, but not without receiving something in return and Yacov suggests trading the lentil stew for Esav's birthright. Esav, the practical minded brother, realizes that a birthright is of no use to him if he is first to die of hunger. Years pass and their father, Isaac, becomes old, blind, and nearing death and he calls Esav into his room and says "My son. Go hunt some deer for me and make the extraordinary dish that I love. Bring it to me and I will eat it and then I will bless you before I die." Rivkah overhears this conversation between Esav and Isaac and tells Yacov what she had heard. Rivkah tells Yaacov to impersonate Esav and to trick his father into receiving Esav's blessing and birthright.
