PAYING TRIBUTE TO JOEL BELLAS, z'l
Vancouver Talmud Torah lost an active and ardent supporter of our school this week with the passing of Joel Bellas, z'l. The entire Jewish community mourns his loss.
Born and raised in Vancouver, Joel graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and in 1972 he received his Professional Teaching Certificate. At UBC, he was involved on the student board of Hillel and he was president of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity.
Joel taught in the public elementary school system for thirty years, impacting a generation of Jewish students at Osler School. In addition to having high expectations of his students, Joel expertly coached extracurricular activities such as track and field.
In the community, Joel became active on the Beth Israel's Youth Committee by planning and helping programs for the teens and preteens in USY. He was elected to the board of the Beth Israel and served for five years as the religious school chairman.
Joel also served for three years on VTT's Education Committee. He joined our board in 2004 and chaired the Bargaining/Negotiations Committee for four years. He also served on the Strategic Planning Committee, the Governance Committee and the Grievance Committee. In 2008, Joel resigned from VTT's board when his son, Rabbi Matthew Bellas, joined the leadership team as the school's Rabbi.
To support their passion for Jewish education, Joel, and his beloved wife, Ilene-Jo (also an educator), set up the Joel and Ilene-Jo Bellas Education Endowment Fund with The Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver.
The funeral will be held Sunday, October 18, 11 am at the Schara Tzedeck cemetery in New Westminster.
Our heartfelt condolences to his wife Ilene-Jo Bellas, his children, Rabbi Matthew (Oksana) Bellas, Adam (Britt) Bellas, Jennifer (Ariel) Wosk, his mother, Sonia Bellas, his sister Francine (Marvin) Binder, his brother-in-law Wayne (Lee) Greenberg, and his grandchildren Yaacov, Maya, Aliza, Jack and Daisy.
Shiva services will be held Sunday - Thursday, October 18 - 22, 6 pm at the Bellas home, 266 Waterleigh Drive, Vancouver.
May his memory be for a blessing.

SCHOOL IMITATES LIFE
Grade 5 students exercised their democratic rights on Thursday and voted for their preferred political party. After registering with their 'driver's license,' they received a ballot, privately checked off their choice and then deposited their ballot under the watchful eye of two monitors. Votes will be tabulated and results declared right after Canada's federal election concludes on Monday.

The Grade 6 students have been busy in science class designing helicopters. The object was to create a helicopter that would be dropped from two metres and have the longest flight time until landing--using only paper and tape as materials. Students have been testing and collecting data from their flight trials and recording the info into their logbooks, which they submitted on Flight Registration Day. This assignment demonstrates their knowledge of using the Scientific Method: Hypothesis, Observation, Experiment, Analysis and Conclusion.
Wednesday October 14 was the final exam -- Flight Day. Their first challenge? Upon entering the classroom, students only had 10 minutes to build their best helicopter from scratch. Next they were divided into groups of three where they took turns timing, dropping, and recording the results.
A unique final exam indeed, and a fun way to conclude the unit!
