PARASHAT HASHAVUAH--WEEKLY TORAH PORTION COMMENTARY

We are pleased to be able to share our students'
divrei Torot (Torah commentaries) with our community. A few weeks ago on a Thursday morning
Last Shabbat, Hannah Casseres (daughter of Sol Casseres and Michelle Kates) celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at Congregation Beth Israel
. She commented on Parashat Naso.

I sometimes get a little bit jealous of my older brother Aaron. He is two and a half years older than I am, so he almost always gets cool stuff before me. Although, that is usually the way it works, it can still be a bit aggravating, watching my brother, playing with his new toy, when I don't have the same thing.

Ever since I was small, there was always that one thing that I was looking forward to getting when I was his age. It started at the age of five. Aaron got his first bike! I was stuck on the attachment on the back of my parents' bike. It was OK though because only a few years later I got my first bike--only to find out it was his old one, and I especially didn't like the fact that it had Spiderman all over it. It is just something that I guess I have to deal with. Sure he will get to drive first, and his room may be bigger, but I can't let jealousy take control of me.

At the end of the day, I don't mind that Aaron has all of these things, because I know that I will always be the favourite child.

Jealousy can be a very hurtful trait.

This week we read parashat Naso.

Grade 6 student Prielle Laniado (daughter of
Naama and Shlomo Laniado) also celebrated her Bat Mitzvah last Sunday at Beit Hamidrash. She studied with rebbitzin Dina Accoca.

Although my Parasha is Shemini, I decided that I did not want my speech to be about that. So, when I was just starting my bat mitzvah lessons, I had to figure out what my speech would be about. My sister, Carmel (who sadly cannot make it here today), encouraged me to think about the women of the Torah. So that's what I will be doing today.

My Hebrew birthdate falls on the 28th of Nissan, or kaf chet of Nissan. In Jewish tradition, each letter of the Hebrew Aleph Bet has a corresponding numerical value; called Gematria: kaf-chet also means koach - strength. While thinking about the meaning of koach or strength, I realized that strength is not only physical strength, it can also be emotional, mental or spiritual strength. All those thoughts made me think: 'hmm.. I come from a family of 4 strong and beautiful women, and my father who is happily outnumbered. So I decided to look for other strong women in our history.
