PARASHAT HASHAVUAH--WEEKLY TORAH PORTION COMMENTARY
We are pleased to be able to share our students'
divrei Torot (Torah commentaries) with our community. During the Passover break, grade seven student Ben Chelin (son of Brian and Jen Chelin) celebrated his Bar Mitzvah is Israel.
The Parasha that I read this morning seems to be very technical when you first read it. It is about purity and impurity and having a second chance to do the passover offering. Specifically there were individuals that were impure and who ask moshe for a second chance to have the Passover because their impurity made it technically impossible to bring the passover offering. Let me give you some of the background to this moment.
As you may know Jacob had a son named Joseph. Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery to Egypt and he lived there for many years and rose to become the second most important man in all of Egypt. Not only did he help Egypt survive a terrible famine but he also made sure his family was protected from starvation. In order to protect the family Joseph moved his entire family to Egypt. When Joseph's father Jacob dies he makes Joseph promise he will bury him in Israel, in the cave of Machpelah. Many years later, when Joseph was on his death bed he too wanted to be buried in Israel. However, he was an Egyptian hero. For comparison it would be like Stephen Harper requesting to be buried in Scotland.

SCHOOL NEWS
VTT grandparent, Vera Bakonyi, came to speak with our Grade 7 students earlier this week to share her experiences as a nine-year old in Hungary during the Holocaust. Do you remember your first dissection? Grade 7 students are bound not to forget dissecting a fish in Ms. Steeves' science class. The worst part, according to most students, was the inability to rid themselves of the fishy odour despite wearing gloves and rinsing their hands in vinegar. Now there's a good business opportunity!

VTT CELEBRATES YOM HA'ATZMA'UT
In a sea of blue and white, students from preschool through grade 7 marked Israel's 67th birthday through spirited celebrations. Many students took virtual trips to Israel, flying in VTT's magnificent El Al airplane, attentively watching the safety video prior to take-off, being served yummy snacks and beverages mid-air, and getting their passports stamped upon arrival. Primary students participated in an Israeli Idol contest, learned Israeli folk dances from Hofit Sabi-Indyk, and were hilariously entertained by Josh Niehaus and Yossi Argov. The day culminated with delicious birthday cake courtesy of iKosherbake.com. Special thanks to Shoshi Burton for organizing the memorable day.
Grades 4 through 7 students spent the afternoon at King David High School where they were treated to a falafel lunch and then teams of students travelled to various stations where they played in bouncy castles and gaga courts, trained for the Israeli army, learned Israeli folk dances and created art work. We wish to express our immense gratitude to the faculty and students at KDHS for being such wonderful hosts!
Our entire preschool gathers for a group photo to mark Israel's independence day.
