The 'Namgis T'sasala Cultural Group will then visit VTT on Monday, March 9th to celebrate Havdallah with our fourth grade students. In anticipation, the students created Star of David dreamcatchers with band members' names in Hebrew attached as a gift to acknowledge their visit. Special thanks to Dina Sacks for her help in creating the unique dreamcatchers. Special thanks to Morah Ellen and our Grade 4 teachers for preparing our students for this important honour.

TORAH PORTION COMMENTARY

We are pleased to be able to share our students'
divrei Torot (Torah commentaries) with our community. Last Saturday, we had two students celebrate their Bar Mitzvahs: grade seven student Ezra Tischler (son of Aimee Promislow and Fred Tischler) celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at The Kollel and Aaron Schaffer (son of Sarah and Nathan Schaffer) held his at Beth Israel. Ezra commented on parashat Tetzaveh while Aaron reflected on the fact that last Saturday was a Shabbat Zachor.

So you all are probably wondering what in the world does "tetzaveh" mean? Well in the first pasuk of my torah portion the answer appears. Tetzaveh means "commend" because god commanded Moses to command the children of Israel to obtain pure olive oil to be used to light the everlasting light in the temple.

My parasha is filled with commandments. There are commandments from God to Moses. God, in turn, commands Moses to command Aron and his sons to do lots of thing related to the temple and about job of the Kohanim. The Kohanim were the priests in the holy temple. Aron was the first Kohan Ha'gadol - which is the high priest.  I think it is a bit odd and interesting that most of the commandments are about the the clothing of the Kohanim. A question that I have been thinking about is - why is most of my Parasha about the clothing of the Kohanim? Why does God think it is so important that we know about the clothes, and that Aron and his sons wore the right clothing?

My question to you is why do you think it was so important to God that he made so many commandments about what exactly the Kohanim should wear?  While you are thinking about that, I will tell you what the Kohanim actually wore.

Today we are celebrating my Bar Mitzvah as well as recalling my Saba David's who never had a chance to fully celebrate his Bar Mitzvah because of

the Holocaust. Today while I am celebrating being thirteen, I was joined by my grandfather on the Bima who has passed his 83rd year. In Jewish law 83 is the age where one can celebrate a Bar Mitzvah for the second time. I know that today is special and I will always remember it.

Today's Shabbat is known as Shabbat Zachor. Zachor means remembering. Remembering the past is very important, so we can make a better future. This has been relevant to many people including my family. All four of my grandparents were Holocaust survivors. They all suffered terrible losses in their families. The fact that each of them survived is a miracle. From my father's parents and my mother's mother who passed away four years ago I have learned many important lessons from their experiences. Even though I never met my mother's father I learned incredible th

ings from him through my mom, such as the importance of perseverance and faith. The lessons from my past will serve me well in my future.

Remembering our past and events in our life guides and directs our future and the choices that we make. Shabbat Zachor is unique because it is the only Torah portion which Jews are commanded to hear read out loud every year. Zachor in English means remembrance. But what exactly are we supposed to remember?

purim 15

In addition to our traditional Purim carnival, this year's Purim celebrations were enhanced by special guests, including The "Schwillman" family, Josh Niehaus, Yossi Argov and megillah readings by students and Morah Lisa Romalis. We also had a somewhat "creepy" display in the foyer. Perhaps you can find it in the photos. Special thanks to Shoshi and the entire organizing committee (Abbie Loomer, Ellen Wiesenthal, Lindsay Abrams, Orly Gal, Kim Fisher and Pat Girling) for a most memorable holiday.
