TORAH PORTION COMMENTARY

We are pleased to be able to share our students'
divrei Torot (Torah commentaries) with our community. Last Saturday night, seventh grade student Jayson Armstrong (son of Beverly Moss and Rob Armstrong) celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at Beth Israel. Below is his analysis of the positive effect a difficult personal challenge can have, based on parashat Tetzaveh.

When I played lacrosse three years ago, I was very happy to start the game. I thought that it was a nice and peaceful game. The second I got into the box, we lined up to do a drill where you have to get the ball while getting checked. Everyone went and I was last in line. Finally it was my turn. So I ran in and picked up the ball. The boy who pursued me crosschecked me and I went flying. I was shocked that one was allowed to hit somebody like that in lacrosse. I wanted to quit after the first practice. My dad looked at me and said, "You need to finish what you started." It was a serious challenge for me to keep going. Though I really wanted to quit, I kept going. And because of that I learnt that good things can come from challenges.

Today we read parashat Tetzaveh. It talks about the a number of important items connected to the mishkan, which was the mobile place of worship for the Israelites while they were wandering in the desert.

SCHOOL NEWS

fred
In preparation for our grade seven service learning on March 11th to feed the homeless, Grade 6 chesed club members and Grade 7 students met with Fred Miller to hear his personal story of how he became homeless. Fred's visit was in preparation for a chesed day on the downtown eastside. Seventh graders will join with the Shia Muslim Ismaili community and St. Augustine's Catholic School to distribute gifts of hope and compassion to those in need.

100 days
We celebrated 100 days of school last week! Kindergarten students marked the day by dressing up as though they were 100 years old.

weather
The Grade 4 students have been learning about the weather in science. They each chose a type of extreme weather and created a model showing the weather and its effects on living and non-living things. Students used a variety of materials to create their original designs which have been on display throughout the week.

Student reflections:

"I like doing the projects because I am into art and it was nice to try to make weather come to life."

"It was really cool to create the models. Some models that were huge were super cool and the smaller ones were just as cool."

"I was able to see the extreme weather event from all angles because they were 3D. I loved the learning mixed with the art."

"It was fun and challenging because I had to think of ways that I could display all my writing and information and make sure people would read it. Even if they didn't read it, I had to make sure someone could just look at my project and understand what my extreme weather event was about."

Although the photos do not do justice to the incredible creativity of their projects, see them here
